Description
v e; s as?! JAIMES I. HELLER, Cl? BLACKSVILLE. WEST VIRGINIA.
JACK HANGER.
Application filed March 15, 192%.
To a?! 20.50ami may cancer n:
Be it known that 1, James I MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Blacksville, in the county of hiionongalia and State of WV est Vir 'inia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Jack Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to attaching devices, and more particularly to what 1 term a ack hanger.
One of the main objects of the invention is to provide a de ice of simple construction and operation which may be readily applied to a jack for use in connection with automobiles, and may be readily produced at small cost. A. further object is to provide a device of this character which, when applied, will facilitate application of the jack and will insure proper positioning thereof relative to the automobile axle. Further objects will appear from the detail description.
in the drawings Fig. 1 is a side view of the device as applied;
Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the device;
Fig. 3 is a side view of the device as applied to a ratchet type of jack.
The device includes a clamp 1 which is formed of two plates 2 and 3 which are forced toward each other by means of bolts a passing through the ends of the plates and nuts 5 threaded onto these bolts. Plate 3 is provided, at one end, with a rectangularly disposed arm 6 to which is riveted one end of a spring clamp 7 of approximately three-quarter circular shape, the free end portion 7 or this clamp or spring being bent outwardly and turned over to provide a transverse sleeve 7". Member 7, which forms a clamping bow, is formed from a single piece of spring steel or other suitable resilient material. The clamping plates 2 and 3 are provided with central arcuate portions 2 and 3, respectively, which are adapted to lit about the neck portion of head of a screw jack J of a known type adapted for use in connection with automobiles, thus providing simple and eflicient means for securing the device to the jack without necessitating any changes in construction thereof. VJhen the device is applied it is positioned so that plates 2 and 3 and bow mem- Serial No. 699,477.
her 7 are disposed in parallelism with head of the jack, the bow member extending above and over the jack head.
l/Vhen it is desired to use the jack it may be readily and accurately positioned by passing bow member 7 over and about axle a of the automobile, after which the jack is released so as to turn about the axle with head j positioned beneath and in contact with the axle, the jack being then extended so as to rest upon the supporting surface, after which the jack is operated so as to raise the axle a. This provides very simple means by which the acl: may be quickly applied to the axle and is so held as to insure proper aligning of the jack with the axle during raising thereof. In addition, this provides very simple means whereby the jack can be quickly and easily applied without loss of time in positioning the jack to insure proper aligning thereof with the axle. In Fig. 3 I have illustrated the device as applied to a jack J of the ratchet type. The device, when applied to a ratchet type 01 jack, is used in the same manner as with a screw jack. This device can be readily produced at small cost and can be quickly applied to either a screw jack or a ratchet jack of standard construction, thus providing a device which is very eiiicient and can be readily produced and applied at small cost.
What I claim is:
1. In a device of the character described, a clamp, and a resilient bow member secured at one end to the clamp and free at its other end, said member extending above the clamp.
2. In a device of the character described, clamp, and a bow shaped flat spring secured at one end to the clamp and extending above the same, the other end of the spring being free and disposed to facilitate placing of the same about an article to be operated upon.
3. In a device 01" the character described, two opposed plates, means for forcing said plates toward each other, one of the plates being provided at one end with a rectangularly disposed arm, and a flat spring of how shape secured at one end to said arm and extending above the plates, the other end of the spring being free.
4:. In a device of the character described,
two opposed plates, means for forcing said plates toward each other, each of the plates being provided With an outwardly curved arcuate portion, and a flat spring secured at 5 one end to one of the plates and extending above the same, the other end of the spring being free.
5. In combination With a jack, a resilient bow shaped member secured at one end to 10 the jack and extending above the head of said jack, the other end of said member being free.
6. In combination With a jack, a fiat spring secured at one end to the head of the jack, said spring being of how shape and extending over the jack head, the other end of the i spring being free.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
JAMES I. MILLER.
