Description

H. POLLEY.
Improvement in Sash-Holders No. 130,532. P at ented-A'u g.13,1872.
Vitnesses Inventor UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
HENRY POLLEY, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOIt TO HIMSELF AND ANTHONY BOSENFIELD, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 130,532, dated August 13, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY POLLEY, of San Francisco, San Francisco county, State of California, have invented an Improved Locking Device for Windows; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawing are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention or improvement without further invention or experiment.
The object of my present invention is to provide an improved lockin g device to be employed chiefly upon windows, but which is ap plicable to any sliding frames; and it consists mainly in the employment of a plate which is is moved from the side of the window-casing against the edges of the sashes, so as to bind either one or bothby the single plate firmly against the opposite casing, the said plate being operated by suitable devices, hereinafter described.
Referring to the accompanying drawing for a more complete explanation of my invention,
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section.
A is a light metal frame which is fitted to the casing so that its front edges are flush with the bottom of the grooves in which the sashes move. At one end a nut is cut, through which the screw B passes, being operated by a milled head, 0. The locking-plate D is made to fit within the frame A, and is provided with guiding-legs E. At the center is formed a boss or projection, F, which rests upon the operatin g-lever H and also serves to guide the movements of the plate by moving in grooves in the sides of the frame A, as shown. The operating lever H is formed like a bell-crank lever and has two projecting lugs which rest in grooves in the sides of the frame A, and serve as fulcrum. One end of the lever is formed to act v upon the plate D, while the other is moved by the end of the screw B.
The operation will be as follows: When th screw is turned it will push against one end of the lever H. This motion is converted by the other arm into a movement at right an gles with the first motion, and thus the plate D is forced against the sashes.
By allowing the plate a rockingmotion about its supporting-lugs F it accommodates itself to any irregularities or inequalities in the position of the two sashes, and thus locks both with equal force. This device also prevents all rattling of the sashes and aids to keep out dust.
Other modifications of the present form of the device can be employed with good effect; but
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with the locking-plate D, the screw B and operating-lever H, or its equivalent, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand and seal.
HENRY POLLEY. [L. s.] lVitnesses:
J. L. BOONE, O. M. RICHARDSON.
