Description

W. J. HOOPEYR.
Portable Ticket-Box.
#5 No. 130,500, Patented Aug. 13,1872.
W'hzawes I V 172%72 Z01 my WILLIAM J. HOOPER, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENT m PORTABLE TICKET-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 130,500, dated August 13, 1872.
Specification describing certain Improvements in Portable Boxes for holding the packages of change used in street-railway cars, invented by WILLIAM J. HOOPER, of the city and county of Baltimore and State of Maryland.
This invention relates to the mode of paying car-fares, in which envelopes containing the proper change for the different denominations of currency and bills, less one fare, and with or without a ticket, are used, and is intended to be used in connection with a portable box to receive the money and tickets from the passengers, so arranged that the conductor cannot abstract the contents. Its nature consists in making the boxes in sections, hinged together at one side, and attaching them to a belt to be fastened around the body of the conductor. The drawing is a front perspective view of the boxes, turned away from each other a little to show the hinge that connects them, and with the covers of one of them opened to show the inside arrangement.
A A are two boxes, made of tin or other suitable material, and divided into an upper and lower part, which parts are subdivided by "ertical partitions 0 into two apartments each. The upper parts are covered with ordinary box-covers 0, hinged to the back edges of the boxes, and are intended to receive the packages in a vertical position. The lower parts,
which extend back under the upper ones, are closed with covers D, which cover the parts by folding up against them, and are hinged at the lower front edges of the boxes. S S are wings, which shut inside the boxes. They are attached to the covers of the lower parts to prevent the packages from falling out when a cover is opened. The packages are intended to be placed in a horizontal position in the lower apartments. H is a belt, attached to the back of the boxes and fastened around the body of the conductor by means of the buckle Ct. Another strap may be fastened to the sides of the boxes and pass up around the neck of the conductor to support the weight of the boxes, if necessary. 9 is a hinge, that connects the two boxes,,and renders the apparatus more convenient and less rigid by allowing the boxes to' conform in position to the shape of the body. The covers of the lower apartments maybe divided into separate-covers for each division of the boxes, if preferred.
hat I claim as my invention is The boxes A A, hinged together, and pro vided with partitions, as described, in combination with the belt H, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
