`Be it known that I, CLARENCE B. IIARLOW, a 'citizen ofthe United States, reslding at i Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, `haveinvented new and useful Im-l provements yin Signaling Devices, of which the following'is a full, clear, concise, and exacty description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in electric signaling devices, and particularly l to the type of device wherein a vibrating diaphragmis provided, which is vibrated under the influence of an electromagnet.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a simplified form of device of this character, which may be cheaply and easily made. L
` My device is particularly adapted for use in mine signaling and like places wherein it is desired to provide a vibratory signal somewhat resemlaling a buzzer, but having a greater volume of sound and being more rigidly constructed.,
For y'the purpose of disclosing my invention, I have illustrated one embodiment thereof* in the accompanying drawings, in whieh- Figure 1 is a plan view of a structure embodying my invention with the cover .removed, and` Fig.2'is a longitudinal section taken on the line 2--2 of Fig. 1. fw
` In `the embodiment illustrated, I provide a diaphragm .1, which may take the form of a dat circular `sheet metal disk provided with an annular up-turned iange 2.y This disk has mounted on the rear face thereof a ring 3, which is secured to the diaphragm .-the diaphragm. The support extends across .thelfront :face of the diaphragm and the diaphragm is' secured thereto by means of four screws 6, which pass through `the support, through the diaphragm anv screw into the ring 3. AThe support is provided with downwardly extending legs 7 having laterally extending feet 8 provlded with suitable scijewholes` 9 through which the iastening screws are passed. l l
Mounted upon the ring 3 is a pair of bridge pieces 10, which extend ,from one side of the ringtothe other and are secured tothe ring by screws 11 passing through inturned feet 12. These bridge pieces provide a support for an electromagnet which comprises a plurality of triangular laminations 13 laid flatwiseupon each other and clamped at theirbases between the tops of the bridge pieces 10, suitable screws 14' passing through the bridge pieces and laminations for holding the laminations in position. The legs of the laminations forming the pole-pieces of the magnet extend downwardly and their lower ends are spaced apart from the diaphragm 1. These legs are surrounded by suitable windings 15, the terminals of which are connected to binding-post plates 16. These binding-post plates are mounted upon an insulating support 17,'which is secured upon the side ofrone of the bridge pieces 10 by suitable screws 18 and is spaced apart from the insulatingbridge piece by bushings 19 surrounding the screws and interposed between the support and the bridge piece. The binding-post plates 14; carry suitable binding screws 20 to which the leading in conductors 21` are secured.v e These con'- ductors are brought in through yopenings formedin the diaphragm 1 and ring 3 and surrounding these openings `are rivets 2K1 which are provided with annular cup `ianges 22exten`ding upwardlyand form reeeivlng cups for waterproofing material which is pou-redk therein` and surrounds the leadingrin wires' 21, thereby preventingthe entrance of any moisture through the openingsv forlthe leading-in wires.

nclosing the operative parts ofthe device is a cover 26, whichtelescopeswithin the annular flange 2 and is forced down against' a rubberr gasket 27 to 'form atthis-point'a watertight joint. This cover is lheld in position by suitable screws 27'a vIra'ssi'ng through the cover and `engaging internallythreaded sleeves 28, which sleeves are secured upon the ring 3 by means of screws 29.
It will be seen from the above that I produce a simple, readily assembled, cheaply manufactured, signaling device, the operative parts of which are inclosed in a watertight casing, and that the support 5 thereof providies a sound chamber for the diaphragm, the diaphragm being suitably spaced' apart fromthe support by means of washers' 30 surrounding the screws 6 and interposed between the support and the diaphragm, the front casing and diaphragm being one and the same piece, and of sufficiently heavy material to repel indefinitely thel atmospheric action.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, iszl. In an electric'soundproducing device, the combination with a diaphragm, of an electromagnet for causing said diaphragm to vibrate, a cover secured to said diaphragm and forming therewith an inclosing casing for the operative parts of the signal, and a wide, fiat support for the signaling device secured across the front face of the diaphragm and spaced apart therefrom to form a sound chamber for the diaphragm.
2. In a sound-producing device, the combination with a diaphragm, of an electro magnet for causing said diaphragm to viL brate, a cover secured to said diaphragm and forming therewith an inclosing casing for the operative parts of the signal, and a wide, flat support having downwardly extending supporting legs and secured across the front face of said diaphragm and spaced apart therefrom to form a sound chamber for said diaphragm.

In a soundproducing device, the combination with a diaphragm havingan angularly extending annular ilange, of an electromagnet for causing said diaphragml to vibrate, a cover telescoping within said flange andl forming with the diaphragm a casing for the operative part-s of the device, and a wide,
Afiat .support for said device extending across the front face of said diaphragm and spaced nected to said diaphragm and forming with the diaphragm an inclosing casing for the operativev parts of the device, a wide, flat support extending across the front'face of said diaphragm, screws extending through the support, the diaphragm and the ring, for securing said parts together and washers interposed between the diaphragm and the support to space the support apart from the diaphragm to form a sound chamber for said diaphragm.
5.111 a sound-producing device, the combination with a diaphragm, of a cover secured to said diaphragm and forming with the diaphragm an inclosing casing for the operative partsof the device, binding-posts mounted within said cover for the leadingin wires of the device, Said diaphragm having openings therein for the passage of said leading-in wires, and water-proofing material receiving cups surrounding said openings for receiving the water-proofing material to seal the openings after the conductors have been placed in position.
6. In an electri. sound-producing device, the combination with a diaphragm, of a cover secured to said diaphragm and forming with the diaphragm an inclosing casing for the operative parts of the device, binding terminals mounted within said casing, said diaphragm having o enings therein for the leading-in wires, an hollow rivets secured insaid openings provided with integrally fformed annular water-proong material re ceiving cups through which the leading-in wires pass.
