To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER E. MOWREY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Arnold, in the county of Custer and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Photographic-Printing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The invention provldes a photographlc apparatus which admits of printing, retouch-- ing, and enlarging of photographs, the appliance obviating the usual dark room and the covering of the head when retouching, thereby simplifying the various operations and adding materially to the comfort of the operator.
The invention has for its object to provide an appliance embodying a cabinet which is adapted to be positioned to admit light and which is provided with door controlled openings whereby the light may be utilized as required according to the nature of the Work to be performed.
The invention provides an appliance specially adapted to be applied to a window so as to control the admission of light, the appliance embodying a light cabinet and a light screen, the latter being provided with openings which are adapted to be normally closed by slides which may be moved to'regulate the admission of light, the openings of the screen being covered by material of such color as to modify the actinic properties of the light admitted into the room.
The drawing illustrates a preferred embodiment of the invention, however, it-is to beunderst'ood that in. adapting the same to meet different conditions, various changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention as claimed hereinafter.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in the several views of the drawing by like reference characters.
The appliance embodies a light cabinet and, a light screen and the same being of such proportions so that when fitted to a 65 window the latter is completely covered thereby excluding the light from the room excepting such as is admitted through properly controlled openings. 'The light cabinet .is closed at its top, bottom, front, and ends, and is open in the rear so as to admit light into the cabinet through the window when the device is in position. The cabinet is mounted upon suitable legs 1. The bottom 2 of the cabinet is extended in the rear 75 so as to overlap the sill 3 of the window as indicated most clearly in Fig. 2. The ends 4: of the cabinet are comprised between the front 5 and top 6, and the bottom 2 of the cabinet. The front 5 is provided with an opening which is covered by means of a door 7, the latter being fitted closely so as to exclude rays of light from escaping from the cabinet into the room. The top 6 has an opening 8 formed'therein and this opening is adapted to be varied in size soas to receive diflerent size frames. A section 9 is removably fitted in the opening 8 so as to vary the size thereof and this section is of L- form whereby to vary the size of the opening to the edges of the opening 8- whereby the section may in position and in turn support 'a-frame or or fsupport for rec iving be retamedin the opening 8.

The doors 11 are spring actuated and reconnected to the top 6 by means of spr1ng hinges 12 of any type. For controlling the doors 11. a treadle 13 is provlded as this treadle is connected by means of cords 1 1 with the respective doors. Guide pulleys 15 give proper direction to the cords 15. The doors 11 are of such construction as to obtain a close fit against the under side of the top 6 so as to prevent the escape of any rays of light through the opening 8 when the doors 11 are closed. The cords 14 pass through openings formed in the bottom 2, such openings being of a size to prevent the escape of light and to insure a close fit therein of the cords 1 1. The light screen is indicated at 16 and consists of a panel and like part of a size to completely close the upper portion of the window. This screen islocated in the rear of the light cabinet and ex tends upwardly from the rear edge of the top 6. When the appliance is fitted to a window the rear portion-of the bottom 2 overlaps the sill 3 of the window 17 and the rear side of the cabinet comes opposite the lower portion of the window thereby freely admitting light into the cabinet. The screen 18 covers the upper portion of the window 1? and is fitted thereto in a manner to exclude rays of light. One or more openings 18 are formed in the lower portion of the screen and are closed by means of slides 19 which are mounted in suitable guide-ways formed on the screen at the sides of the openings 18. The openings 18 are covered by material 20 of a color to modifythe actinic properties of light so that the light admitted into the room through the openings 18 will not afiect the sensitized films or plates thereby admitting of negatives being held in substantially the same manner as in a dark room. When the slides 19 are moved so as to cover the openings 18 all light is excluded from the room and by opening the slides 19 more or less any required amount may be admitted into the room so that the work may be properly conducted.
From the foregoing it will be understood that the appliance when in position for service is fitted to the-window of a room or a like place, the light from the outside having unobstructed passage into the light cabinet through the opening back or rear thereof.

In case the light is too strong it is to be understood that the window may be suitably covered by means of a sheet, either of textile or paper.
The foregoing description and the drawings have reference to what may be considcred the preferred, or approved, form of my invention. It is to be understood that 1 may make such changes in construction and arrangement and combination of parts, materials, dimensions, et cetera, as may prove expedient and fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what 1 claim aS new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A photographic printing apparatus, comprising a cabinet to be fitted to the lower portion of a window opening and having a light receiving opening in the rear and a negative receiving opening in the top, and a screen supported by the cabinet and adapted to cover the upper portion of the window opening and having a light opening therein and a closure for said light opening. A photographic printing apparatus to be. applied to a window opening, the same comprising a cabinet having a hghtreceiving opening in its rear and a negative receiving opening in its top, a screen projected vertically from the cabinet in line with the rear side thereof and formed with alight opening, a closure for the light opening in the screen and means for closing the negative receiving opening of the cabinet.
