HOISTING ATTACHMENT FOR DUMP- BODIES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 27, 1919'.-
Application filed January 16. 1919. Serial No. 271.410.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN S. MINTON, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Hastings, in the county of Adams and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Hoisting Attachment for Dump-Bodies, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a hoisting attachment for the dump bodies of trucks and the like, one of the objects of the invention being to provide an attachment which can be mounted readily on the chassis of a motor vehicle close to the front end of the body and which, when attached to said end of the body, will operate efficiently to raise the front end of the body and cause said body to tilt and discharge its contents.
A further object is to provide an attachment of this character which is simple in construction, and can be operated readily, and which will not accidentally reverse its movement and lower the body.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter clescribed and claimed, it being understood that within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a vehicle having the improvements combined therewith.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the hoist attachment, a portion being shown in section.
Fig. 3 is a View partly in side elevation and partly in section of the hoisting attachment.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference A designates a portion of the cha$is of a motor vehicle and B designates a portion of the dump body thereon, said body being adapted to tilt about a cross shaft 7) connecting the sides of the chassis. The hoisting attachment constituting the present invention is adapted to be placed close to the front end of the dump body B and includes a cross strip 1 supporting a bearing 2 into which extend bearing sleeves A shaft 4c is journaled in the sleeves and is provided, at its center, with a worm 5. A metal frame 6 is mounted on the shaft 4 and is provided at its lower end, with spaced sleeves 7 which are secured about the shaft, \the worm 5 being exposed between the sleeves 7, as shown.
The frame 6 constitutes the base portion of an arm 8 constructed in any suitable man nor and provided, at its upper end, with a sheave 9. Journaled within the frame is a short shaft 10 to which is secured a worm gear 11. This gear constantly meshes with the worm 5. A drum 12 rotates with the shaft 10 and gear 11 and one end of a cable 13 is fastened to the drum and is adapted to be wound thereon. This cable extends over the sheave 9 and is secured at its other end to the front end portion of the body B.
The shaft 4 extends laterally and is adapted to be rotated in any suitable manner by hand or by motor. The worm 5 obviously prevents the ear 11 from rotating when sub jected to a p 1 through the cable 13. As the cable 13 is taut at all times, it operates to hold the arm in an upstanding position. When it is desired to dump the body B, the shaft 4 is rotated and this causes the worm 5 to rotate the gear 11 and wind the cable 13 on the drum 12. .Said cable, will therefore, pull upwardly on the front end of the body B so that the contents of the body will be dumped. The weightof the body transmitted through the cable 13 to the arm 8 will serve to hold the arm 8 in an upstanding position. Furthermore, as the arm is mounted freely on the shaft 4, said arm will adjust itself automatically during the raising and lowering of the body so that the depending portion of the cable 8 connected to the body will always remain substantially vertical.
What is claimed is:
A hoisting attachment for the dump body of a vehicle, including bearing members, a shaft journaled therein and having a worm, a frame mounted to swing on the shaft between the worm and the bearing members, an arm extending from and movable with the frame, a shaft journaled in the frame, a
gear secured to the shaft and meshing with as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signalthe Worm, a. drum revoluble with the gear, ture 1n the presence of two wltnesses.
a sheave at the free end of the arm and a JOHN S. MINTON. hoisting cable mounted on the sheave and Witnesses: 5 secured to the drum. WILLIAM M. BONNEWELL,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing JANEER WV. SNYDER.
