To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ERNEST D. FIEUX and States, and residents, respectively, of New -York city, county and State ofNew York,
and Rahway,-in thecounty of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Air-Propellers, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to air propellers preferably of the fan blower type wherein the air is propelled parallel with the axis of the blower.
Air propellers of this character have been previously constructed with a rotatable fan surrounded by a casing having its inner wall in close proximity with the end of the fan blades. In this construction, as the fan revolves, a portion of the air which is drawn in by suction. is expelled radially from the v periphery'of the-fan by centrifugal force,
and since the ends of the fan blades are, in. close relation'with the casing, there is no space therebetween in which this air may escape and it consequently becomes compressed against the inner wall of the casing and then seeks its way out from between the blades on both sides of the fan. It has been found by experiment that a large portion of this radially forced air seeks its .way out back throughthe suction opening, thus a material percentage of'the air drawn in by the .fan is lost .and not propelled through the apparatus; and, further, that this radially expelled air by being coinpressed against the innerwall of the casing offers a resistance to the rotation of the fan and chokes the'suction opening.
The object of this invention is to overcome the above deficiency and to increase the e v ciency of air propellers.

In the accompanying drawings the inventlon is described in a concrete and preferred form but changes of construction may be made without departing from the legitimate and intended scope of the invention as expressedin the appended claims.

An annular flange 3 is extended from the inner wall of the casing at'a point adjacent one end .thereof and is directed forwardly and inwardly toward said end. In the embodiments shown herein it is preferred to gradually curve said flange inwardly so as 3 for a purpose which will be presently set forth. A rotatable shaft 4 is extended into the casing 1 and is supported-by the stud bolts 5 in a manner which has been setforthin detail in a copending application. The flange 3 is solid to the edgeof the casing at points where the stud bolts 5 are to be supported and are suitably threaded to receive disposed in the plane of the annular flange 3 so as to rotate within-the samewith the rear outer portions of the blades thereof in approximate close relation with the inner:

This ring 8 is of approximately the same diameter as the casing but has the diameter of its central opening of a lesser diameter than the diameter of the blower so as to restrict the admission of air tothe fan and to prevent any outward flow of radially expelled air from the ends of the fan through the suction opening.
The ring 8 is preferably remova'bly held in position by the sleeve members which surround the stud bolts'5, and whichbear against the ring and force the same in juxtaposition with the edge of the casing i and the flange 3 as the bolts are threaded therein. Thus it will be seen that this ring may be easily removed so that the blower 6 may be withdrawn from the casing for any desired purpose.
It will benoted that by the present invention provision has been made so that the air radially forced from the blower by centrifugal force will not in any way impede the rotary operation of the fan or choke the suction opening so as to prevent the etlicient operation thereof, and that this centrifugally forced air is collected and, deflected to a desired path; It is to be understood that the exact and specific construction of the deflector or flange 3 may be varied as desired, to an difierent formation or angle that falls wlthin the scope of the appended claims.

An air propelling device, comprising a' rotatable blower havingvanes creating a current'of air comprising a main stream having a generallv axial direction and stray streams having generally radial directions, a casing for said'blower comprising a portion closely surroundin the peripheral edges or of said vanes at the in ct side, .a portion of greater diameter in advance of said first mentioned portionand an intermediate connecting portion having a curved surface surrounding the peripheral edges of said vanes and diverging therefrom in a direction toward the delivery side of said blower, said connecting portion having its surface shaped to deflect the air. discharged from the ends of said vanes into a generally axial direction in parallelism with the main stream.
2. An air propelling device, comprising a rotatable blower having vanes creating a current of air comprising a main stream having a generally axial direction and stray streams having generally radial directions,
a casing for said blower comprising two cylindrical portions concentric with the axis of rotation of the blower, one such portion closely surrounding the peripheral edges of the blower vanes at their inlet side, the other portion being of a larger diameter and surrounding said blower vanes at their delivery side and in advance thereof, and an intermediate portion connecting said two cylindrical portions and having its surface shaped to deflect said stray streams to a gen erally axial direction in parallelism with the main stream.
