DAMPER FOR COMBINATION COAL AND GAS RANGES.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY C. DIETRIOH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Evansville, in the county of Vanderburg and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dampers for Combination Coal and Gas Ranges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to dampers for combination coal and gas ranges.
In a combination coal and gas range where the same take-ofl flue that communicates with the interior of the oven, also serves as an outlet for the usual oven-heating flue from the coal fire pot, it becomes necessary to provide a damper to close communication between the heating flue and'the oven when coal is used, and to open communication between the oven and the take-ofl flue when gas is used.
In my earlier patents I have shown such a damper and means for opening and closing it when the gas is turned on or off.
My presentinvention has for its object the provision of a simple, inexpensive, and re-..
liable damper, adapted to be opened and closed by the insertion within, or removal from, the oven, of a shelf or oven plate, which automatically puts the interior of the oven into communication with the take off flue when gas is to be used, and closes such communication when the fluel is to be coal.
The damper consists of an arm of improved form and arrangement pivoted to the rear wall of the oven, inside the latter, adapted to be opened or closed by the engagement therewith of a removable oven plate or shelf, as will appear more fully hereinafter.
My invention does away with the expensive mechanism set forth in my earlier patents and provides a simple, inexpensive and reliable means for accomplishing the purpose heretofore specified.

Figure 1 is a front perspective view of a combination coal and gas range provided with my improvements, certain parts being removed and others broken away, the oven plate being in position, the damper open, and the stove ready for the use of gas;

Only so much of the combination coal and gasrange is shown as will afford a clear idea of the nature of the invention and its use. The firebox is shown at 1, the oven at 2, the
usual flue around the oven at 3 by which the products of combustion from the fire box heat the oven without having access thereto, and the take olf flue at 4:. The as burners may be arranged as at 5 in ohamdoers 6 having air inlets 7 and communicating with the lower and upper parts of the oven at 8 and 9. v
In the rear wall of the oven are exit ports 10 communicating with take off flue 4L for the outward passage of the heat so that there will be free circulation through the oven.-
My improved dampercomprises a flat arm 11, pivoted in any suitable manner at 12 to the rear wall of the oven and adapted to cover the ports 10 when in lower position. A stud or pin 13 on the rear wall of the oven limits the drop of the damper, and an L- shaped keeper 1 1 is adapted to receive the free end of the damper and hold it snugly against the oven wall so that it will tightly close the ports 10 and prevent the admission of the products of coal-combustion from the flue 3 when coal is used. A pin or stud 15 limits the upward movement of the damper. Preferably, the free end of the damper is tapered, as at 16, to cause it to more snugly fit keeper 14 and thus more closely cover the ports 10. The other end of the damper has an angularly arranged part 17 provided with an inclined upper face or edge 18.
Projecting from the sides of the oven be tween the ports 8 and 9 are lugs, ledges, or supports 19.
An oven plate 20 which is removably supported on the lugs or supports 19 may be of any suitable form to permit the heat to pass from the space therebelow to the upper part of the oven. This plate may have openings 20 for that purpose, or be otherwise formed. When slid onto, or placed upon, the supports 19, the lower face of the oven plate 20 damper to the open position shown in Figs. 1 and a. The stove is then ready for the use of gas.
When the oven plate QO is removed, the damper drops and closes the ports 10; the stove is then in condition for the use of coal as a fuel. a
The oven plate 20 is used only when gas is to be consumed. The gas flame andheat therefrom enter the oven below the plate 20 via the openings 8 and above the plate via the openings 9. The bread, cake, or other food which rests upon the oven plate 20 will be thoroughly cooked by the heat above and below the said plate before the heat passes off through ports 10.
When coal is used, the heat is radiated into the oven from flue 3.
What I claim is:
1. In an oven having an outlet in one of its walls, a damper mounted to slide over the face of said wall, to open and close said outlet, and a removable oven plate adapted to directly and detachably reston a portion of said camper to cause opening of said damper when said oven plate is in position in the oven.
2. In an oven having an outlet in one of its walls, a pivoted self-closing damper mounted to swing in a vertical plane over the face of said wall to open and close said outlet, said damper having a part arranged angularly thereto, and a removable oven plate adapted to directly rest on said angw larly arranged part to open the damper when the oven plate is in position, said oven plate being disengageable from the angularly arranged part of the damper to permit the damper to close.
3. In an oven having an outlet in one of its walls, a pivoted self-closing damper mounted to swing in avertical plane over the face of said wall to open and close said outlet, said damper having part arranged angularly thereto provided with an inclined edge, and a removable oven plate adapted to directly rest on said inclined edge of the angularly arranged part to open the damper when the oven plate is in position, said oven plate being disengageable from the inclined edge aforesaid to permit the damper to close.
4. In an oven having an outlet in one of its walls, a single vertically movable selfclosing pivoted damper mounted to swing in a vertical plane over the face of said wall and controlling said outlet, provided with a part arranged angularly thereto having an incline, stops which limit the up and down movements of the damper, a keeper which receives the damper when in closed position, and a removable oven plate adapted to directly rest on the incline aforesaid to open the damper when the oven plate is in position, said oven plate being disengageable from the incline to permit the damper to close.
