To all 'whom/it may concern:
`Be it known that I, MILTON- VLBECHTEL, acitizen of the United States, residing at Warren, in l.the county of Trumbull and State of Ohio, haveinvented a vcertainne'w and useful Improvement in Die-Stocks, of which the kfollowingisr a full, clear, and exact description, reference being hadV to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a die stock of the type whereinY the chasers are rigid in .a 'holder during operation. The object of the invention is to provide ina very simple and efficient form a die stock of this char acter, having the chasers carried as a unit ,bya holder removable from the frame, en-
abling the ready interchange of dierent sets ofchasers `for 'di'iferent sizes of 'pipes to be threaded. My invention provides a chaser-carrying frame Which: also acts as the bushing forguiding' the' die stock about the pipe, this frame `being removablefrom, 'but readily locked to, the handle frame by :which the die stock is turned. The main frame of my die stock, desig- 'nated l0, consists of a substantially Vparallel-'sided block having an internal cylindrical chamber 11 overhung at the front by an integral flange 12 of the block. The frame 'is provided with' diametrically opposite sockets 13, which are internally'threaded to receive operating handles 25.` The frame is also provided with a'radial housing 16 for va locking plunger, to bel hereinafter described. The sockets and housing are braced yby suitable stiening webs V17. The chasers-are indicated at 30. They are substantially rectangular blocks having cutting teeth 3l at .their inner edges'and having holesv4 32 through them. These chas-` ers are rigidly mounted in radial guideways in the chaser-carrying, frame 40,v heilig locked thereto by screws 35 passing through the holes 32.
The chaser-carrying frame hasa cupi-like head 4l with a front `ange 42 and pairs-of radial webs 45 providing between them the chaser guideways.` The screws 35 extend through these radial xwebszand lockthe-chasers in place. The chaser-carrying frame has a sleeve 46 wliichprojects tothe' rear 'of the head and is adapted to extend into :thehandle frame and be locked thereto,as ,hereinafter described. To eiectively lock the chaser frame'to the handle frame, and atthe same time allow the ready removal of-thechaser frame, I provide thefollowing constructionz Within the chamberof the handle frame V`is a movable ring50, having alcylindrical inner and outer periphery; --In the inner periphery` of this ring are grooves 52 parallel with the axis of the die stock. I haveshown two of these grooves -diametrically fopposite.V Thesleeve of :the ichaser frame-is providedy with a pair of vcorrespondingly posif tioned ribs`48,'which may be integral with -the sleeve.l `These ribs are adapted-to be y rotation, -it is held against pulling voutloy reason of the ribs passing behind the flange 12. Accordingly, if I lock the ring 50 in position after such partial rotation has been made, the chaser carrier is rigidly locked to the handle frame.
To lock the ring 50 to the handle frame, as above referred to, I provide a plunger 60 slidably mounted in the radial housing 16. This plunger is carried in a bushing 62 screwed into the interior of the housing, and is pressed inwardly by a spring 63 surrouuding the shank of the plunger and compressed between the bushing and a head 64 on the plunger. A boss or lug 65 on the inner end of the plunger is adapted to seat in a notch 51 in the ring 50, this notch being so positioned that when it is in registration with the plunger the grooves 52 are out of registration with the notches 19. To operate the plunger I provide it with a suitable handle 67, which may conveniently be a plate occupying a kerf in the plunger 60 and riveted thereto. In the locked position this handle occupies diametrically opposite notches 68 in the housing, and in such position the boss occupies the notch 51 and thus locks the ring and thereby the chaser frame to the handle frame.
To remove the chaser frame, it is only necessary to grasp the head of the plunger 60 and draw it out and give it a partial turn. This causes the inner edge of the handle 67 to bear against the end of the housing and hold the boss out of the notch 51. This frees the ring 50. Thereupon the chaser frame may be grasped by the hand and given a partial rotation until the ri'bs thereof come opposite the notches 19, whereupon the chaser frame may be drawn axially outwardly and separated from the handle frame.
It will be seen that chaser frames of different internal bore and chasers having teeth for dierent sized pipes may readily be used with the same handle frame, it being only ynecessary that the exterior of the sleeve portion of the chaser frame correspond to the interior of the handle frame and locking ring. This makes a very simple and readily interchangeable construction. The device is also very compact. The sleeve portion of the chaser-carrier takes the place of a separate bushing, or other means, for guiding the die stock. The head of the chaser-carrier is en larged or cupped out, sufficiently to provide space for chips and for the ready oiling of the cutting teeth.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. The combination of a rotary frame having an internal chamber, a ring within said chamber, a chaser frame having a sleeve adapted to extend into said ring, a key-and-groove connection between the chaser frame and ring, means for preventing the separation of the chaser frame and ring in certain positions of the ring, and means for positively locking the ring in one of such positions, and chasers carried by the chaser frame.
2. In a die stock, the combination of a rotary frame having a cylindrical cavity, a
ring having a cylindrical inner and outer periphery and occupying said' cavity, said ring having an external notch, a plunger adapted to occupy said notch and positively lock the ring against movement in either direction, a chaser frame having a sleeve adapted to closely occupy the interior of the ring, said sleeve having a rib on its exterior and the ringl having a groove to receive the rib, said rotary frame having a flange adapted to overhang the outer end of said rib, there being a notchthrough said flange adapted to aline with the internal groove in the ring when the external notch in the ring is out of alinement with the plunger, and a chaser carried by said chaser frame.
3. The combination of a handle frame having a pairof diametrically opposite sockets, handles occupying said sockets, said handle frame having an internally cylindrical chamberoverhung atthe front by a flange having a notch, a movable ring within the chamber and having a notch in its outer periphery, a radial housing carried by the frame, a plunger mounted in said housing and having its inner end adapted to occupy the external notch in the ring and prevent movement thereof in either direction at a time when an internal groove in the ring is out of registration with the notch through said flange, a chaser frame having a cylindrical sleeve adapted to occupy said movable ring and having an external rib adapted to pass through the notch in the fiange intothe internal lgroove of the movable ring, said rib being adapted to pass behind the flange when the movable ring is turned about its axis, and chasers carried by the chaser frame.
4. The combination of a handle frame having a pair of diametrically opposite sockets, handles occupying said sockets, said handle frame having an internally cylindrical chamber overhung at the front by a flange integral with the frame and overhung at the rear by a ring removably secured to the frame, a movable ringwithin the chamber specified and having an abrupt notch in its outer periphery, a radial housing carried. by the frame, a spring-pressed plunger mounted lin said housing and having its inner end abrupt on both sides and adapted to occupy the notch in the ring and positively lock the ring at a time when an internal groove in the ring is out of registration with a notch through said flange, a chaser frame having a cylindrical sleeve adapted to occupy said movable ring and provided With a rigid external rib adapted to pass through the notch in the flange into the internal groove of the movable ring, said rib beingv adapted to pass behind the fiange when the movable ring is turned about its axis, and chasers carried by the Chaser frame.
5. In a die stock, the combination of a handle frame, a rotative ring carried thereby, a plunger engaging said ring, a holder 10 for chasers having a sleeve portion occupying the ring, having a cup-like portion at the side of the handle frame, said cup-like p0rtion having radial openings in its Wall, radial chasers occupying said opening, bolts passing through the chasers respectively, and each threaded into ortions of the head.
