Improvement in Pocket Cartridge-Loader.
No. l30,414. PPPPP ted A u uu 3,1872.
I GEORGE F. DUTCH, OF YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN POCKET CARTRIDGE-=LOADERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 120 13 3, dated August 13, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
Object and Nature of the Invention.
This invention relates to those instruments which are used for extracting the exploded cap from metallic or other cartridge-shells for breech-loadingfowling-pieces, and for recapping and reloading said shells, so as to use them a second, third, or more times. I am aware that machines have been made for such purposes, but such machines have levers or screws actingupon separate plungers. I know that simple loaders or plungers having a handle have been made to serve the double purpose of a loader and cap-extractor, but not a recapper. The object in view is to obtain a pocket instrument cheap to'manufacture, simple, and durable, which will combine the three into one instrument-via, cap-extractor, recapper, and loader. The invention consists in the combination of a plunger with a head or thimble-knob, whereby the object is attained.
My improved reloader I construct as follows:
-Descr'iptt'on of Drawing.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through center of my universal reloader, as it is when closed to put in the pocket, or to be used as recapper and reloader. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same, represented in the position for extracting the exploded cap of a shell; and Fig. 3 is again a similar view of the same in position in the shell for recapping said shell.
General Description. a
O is a plunger, the body of which is cylindrical, and the two ends of which are shaped as seen in the drawing, as follows: The end D is turned down smaller for a certain distance leaving a small shoulder; this'turning down the end is to enable said end to enter the re-enforced part of the shell, so as to sustain in a central position the pin E, which is inserted firmly in a cavity made at the center of the end D of the plunger 0. The end F of the plunger 0 has also a cavity, G, at its center, so as not to allow the plungers end to A is a head or knob, fitting over the part D of the plunger 0, as seen in the drawing, and
' having an annular space, B, turned at the top,
so as to receive the flange end of the cartridge-shell. The shape of the balance of the head A is entirely optional with the manufacturer, but in order to render it neat and handy I prefer it of the knob-shape illustrated in my drawing. Both the plunger (3 and head A may be made of metal, ivory, bone, wood, rubber, horn, &c.; and the pinE is made of metal.
Operation of my Improved Reloader.
When the head A is placed on the end (I! of the plunger (3 the pin E is protected, and my instrument may be packed with the gun or carried in the pocket. It is a good loader, and is also ready to be used for recapping, as seen in Fig. 3, where the end F of the plunger 0 is introduced into the shellL, and the plunger pushed down as far as it will go therein. A percussion-cap is now placed at J, and is resting against or on a solid surface, 00, when a slight blow with the hand upon the head A will drive the cap home perfectly safe and straight without spoiling the shell, for the end of the plunger F bears fair upon the butt K of the said shell. For extracting the exploded cap of a shell take off the head A from the plungerO, uncovering the pin H slip the cartridge over the end D of the plunger 0; place the whole (resting the end F) against or upon a solid surface, Z 5 place the head A over .the butt of the cartridge, as seen in Fig, 2, when a small tap with the hand upon the top of the head A will drive out the cap from the cap-holding cup H. v
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
Claim.
The combination-of the plunger 0 and head A, constructed substantially as described, to make a combined pocket cartridge-shell, reloader, recapper, and cap-extractor, as herein set forth.
