CASTING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Original application filed July 9, 1918, Serial No. 244,099. Divided and this application filed February 14,
. 1919. Serial No. 277,079.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS WILLIAM STOKES, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 20 Alexandra avenue, Mansfield, Nottingham, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Casting-Machines, of which the following is a specification. v
This invention relates to casting machines of the kind in which a rotating mold is made use of, into which the metal or other material. to be cast is introduced through a centrally arranged pourer from which it is projected against the inner periphery of the rotatin mold by the action of centrifugal force. his application is a division of my application, Serial No. 244,099 filed July 9, 1918.
In a casting machine according to the invention the mold is made in halves mounted in or on a guide so that they can move toward or away from one another in a rectilinear path in the same plane, the said mold parts being separated from one another when the machine is at rest and closed together when the mold is rotated by the centrifugal action generated by the rotation.
In a suitable construction of machine, em bodying this principle the mold parts are connected by bell-crank levers to a pair of weights arranged to slide radially similarly to the said mold parts or halves in radial guides in a rotatable face plate, each weight being attached by its lever to the half-mold remote from it and being normally drawn toward the center of the face-plate by spring action and caused to recede therefrom, when the mold is rotated by the centrifugal action generated so as thereby to close the half mold together.
The machine may also be provided with means for automatically ejecting the casting from the mold as the latter opens. Such means may comprise a pair of bell-crank levers pivotally mounted upon the face plate, the inner arms of the said levers extendin within the inner end of the mold and being normally i. 6. when the machine is at rest, retained in that position under spring action and being withdrawn under centrifugal action, when the mold is rotating, by weights sliding 1n radial guides,
at right angles to the mold guides in the face plate, and connected to the outer arms of the levers by links. As will be underenter the space between the separating halves and eject the casting.
In the accompanying drawings Figure l is a sectional side view of a casting machine mold constructed according to the invention.
Fig. 2 is a face view thereof, and
Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of the mold.-
The mold is made in halves I) designed to move or slide in a guide 0 formed in the rotatable face-plate c the said mold halves being attached by rods B to weights C. These weights are also designed to slide 'in the guide groove 0 and are normally drawn toward the center of the face-plate c by springs C in which position the halves b of the mold are drawn apart. On the faceplate rotating, the centrifugal force generated causes the weights C to move outward away from the center of the face-plate c and so to draw the half molds 6 together and retain them in place until the casting operation is completed and the rotation of the face-plate is stopped, when the half molds open, thus permitting the casting to be extracted.
This extraction may be effected automatically, for example, as follows :On each side of the face-plate 0 and opposite the joint line of the half molds b there are pro vided'weights D which move in guides E in the plate, their motion being controlled by springs F and centrifugal action. Each weight is connected by means of the rod G to the bell-crank lever H pivoted at J to the face-plate 0 and mounted so that its free end is directed against the inner end of the mold.
The apparatus operates as follows, that is to say, when the face-plate c is at rest the half molds b are separated from one another by the springs C but when the said face-plate is rotated the pull of the said springs is overcome by the centrifugal force generated under which the weights C move outward and so close the half-molds to gether as indicated in the drawing. The centrifugal force has at the same time projected the weights D outward so as to bring the levers H into the position shown in Fig. 3. When the casting operation is complete and the apparatus is brought to rest, the weights G are again drawn toward one another by the springs C so that the mold is opened and at the same time the weights -D are also drawn inward by their springs so as to cause the inner ends of the levers H to move outward and against the inner end of the casting withinthe mold and so eject it.
Claims:
1. A centrifugal casting machine wherein the mold is made in halves mounted in or on a guide and so arranged that they are separated by spring action when the machine is at rest and closed together by the action of centrifugal force when the machine is in operationr substantially as hereinbefore dc scribed. p
2. A centrifugal casting machine as claimed in claim 1, wherein the half molds are mounted in or on a guide in or on a rotatable face-plate in which are also sli,da
claimed in claim 2, wherein bell-crank levers v are interposed between the weights and half molds, substantially as described.
4. The combination with a casting machine as claimed in claims 1, 2 and 3 of means for automatically ejecting the casting from the mold as the latter opens.
5. The combination with a casting machine as claimed in claims 1, 2 and 3 of a a pair of bell-crank levers pivotally mounted on the mold carrier and under the control of springs and centrifugal wei hts for effecting the automatic discharge of the cast article from the mold, substantially as hereinbefore described and illustrated.
