Description

F. W. STOKES. CASTING MACHINE. APPLICATION FILED JULY 9.1918.

CASTING-MACHINE.
rotating mold by the action of centrifugal force. vMy invention comprises certain improvements in apparatus of this class for the purpose of improving its efliciency and rendering it more adapted for use in specific cases.
According to the invention the mold is made in two parts which are normally, that is to say, when the machine is at rest, automatically held in the separated or open positions, but which, when the machine is r0- tated, are automatically closed by the con-- trifugal force generated by such rotation.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side view of one form of centrifugal casting machine embodying the improvements. 7
Fig. 2 is an end view illustrating the mold and connections therefor.
Referring to the construction of casting machine illustrated, which is designed for the production of small castings, a, indicates the bed-plate of the machine, 6 indicates the two halves of the mold and 1' shows two bell-crank-levers, to one end of each of which one half of the mold is secured. The said'bell-crank-levers 1 are pivotally mounted at r on the end of a spindle s which is mounted inbearings 8 8 carried by the bedplate a of the machine. The other ends of the bell-crank-levers '1' are furnished with the weights t which are connected by the springs u, the elasticity of which draws the said weights t toward one another so as to open the mold when the machine is at rest.
When .the mold is being rotated through the medium of the driving spindle s, the centrifugal force which. is developed overcomes the tension of the springs 'w so that the weights t are caused. to move apart and Specification of Letters Patent.

thereby close the mold which is retained in the closed position until the rotation of the said spindle ceases.
'v is a plate which is freely mounted on the driving spindle 8 and is furnished with the cam slots '0 with which engages pins 25 carried by the weights 2?, the object of this arrangement being to insure that the mold q is retained in the true axial position during rotation.
w indicates the pourer which is loosely mounted in the support as, its outer end be ing furnished. with a hand-wheel y, by means of which the said pourer can be turned and adjusted longitudinally as required in the operation of the machine.
Claims:
1. In a centrifugal casting machine of the kind herein referred to the combination with a multipart mold normally held separated or open, of means whereby the parts of the mold are closed by centrifugal force generated by the rotation of the mold, substantially as described.
2. In a centrifugal casting machine as claimed in the preceding claiming clause, the construction wherein the mold is made in two parts each carried upon a pivoted lever mounted upon a driving spindle and means for retaining the said levers in a position such that the mold is open when at rest, and closed when under the action of centrifugal force generated when the mold is rota'ted, substantially as hereinbefore described.
3. In a centrifugal castingmachine of, the kind claimed in the preceding claiming clause, the construction wherein each of the half-molds is carried on one arm of a bell- .crank lever pivoted to a driving spindle and two weights being connected together by a spring device, substantially as described.
4. In a centrifugal casting. machine as claimed in the preceding claiming clause the provision of means such as a slotted plate with which pins upon the weights engage for maintaining the mold in the true axial position during rotation, substantially as described. r
