Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 20, 1919.
Application led May 27, 1918. Serial No. 236,779.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, MYnToN E. BEAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ghildrens Toilet- Sea-ts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved toilet seat for small children, and the object of the invention is to provide means by which such a seat may be quickly and securely mounted on a standard toilet seat and which is arranged to be quickly folded into compact position for storage or transportation.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a vertical front-to-rear section, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section showing a seat embodying my invention mounted upon a standard fixture.
In the drawings, 5 indicates a closet bowl and 6 the usual wooden seat thereon. My improved device comp-rises a base or seat portion 7 having a hole of smaller dimensions than the one in the seat 6. The base 7 is arranged to be secured in place on the seat 6 by means which is secured to the lower side of said base and which depends through the opening in the seat 6 and engages beneath the edges of the latter opening. Said means in the form herein shown comprises a rod 8 having its mid-portion secured to the underside o-f the base 7 rearwardly of the opening therein in such a manner that the rod may turn in its bearings. Suitable means such as staples 8ZL may be employed to secure the rod in place. The end portions of the rod are oiset and are sloped dorwnwardly to engage beneath the seat 6.
In associating the device with the seat 6 the hooked end portions of the rod 8 are passed through the mid-portion of the opening in the seat 6, the rod 8be1ng moved by gravity into operative position. Tlhe `base 7 is then moved rearwardly during whichl movement the inclined ends of the rod 8 will frictionally bind against the edge of the opening in the seat 6 so that the base 7 will be firmly secured in place.
To remove the device from the seat 6 the device is simply drawn forwardly. When the hooked rod 8 is disengaged from the seat 6 the rod may be turned to bring the angular ends closely along the lower face of the seat 7 so as to further reduce the space required for storage of the device. This foldable feature is important to the manufacturer because it reduces the size of the package tol Ibe shipped and also lessens lia.- bility of damage to the parts by rough handling in shipment.
Spaced above the base 7 is a suitable guard which may be in the form of a U- shaped frame 9 providing side-arms and a back to partially surround the child. This guard frame is connected to the base 7 by means 0f suitable links or braces 11 at three places which are so arranged that the guard and links may be collapsed to lie closely on top of the sea-t 7. This collapsible upper structure forms the subject matter of my Patent N o. 1,267,590, issued May 28th, 1918. i
I claim as my invention l. A childs toilet Seat comprising a base adapted t0 be set upon an ordinary toilet seat, and a device mounted on said base at one end thereof and adapted to depend through the opening in the main toilet seat and engage beneath the latter, said device being disengagea'ble from the seat by amovement of the base relative thereto.
2. A childs toilet seat comprising a base adapted to be set upon an ordinary toilet seat, and a member pivotally mounted on said base and depending therefrom and arranged to pass through the opening in the main toilet seat and engage beneath the opposite edges thereof, said memlber being adapted to collapse alongside said base when not in use.
3. A childs toilet seat comprising a base adapted to be setupon an ordinary toilet seat, and a rod having its mid-portion pivotally secured to the lower face of said base, the end portions of said rod being offset downwardly and inclined and adapted to be passed downwardly through the opening in the main seat and engage beneath the edges of the latter.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
MYRTON E. REAM.
