vEnIcLE-STOEAGE BUILDING.
.v specificati-on of Letters Patent.
Application led May To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,
United States, Portland, county of .Multnomah a citizen of the Oregon, have invented certain ful Improvements in tion.
general, and particularly automobiles.
The object of my a means for storing congested districts o conserve the My invention relatesto the of buildings for the valuable ground space the following is a specificaconstruction storage of vehicles in for the storage of invention is to provide automobiles within the f large cities that shall therein and is so illustrated in the accompanying drawings which tion for Letters Figure 1 is a form a part of this applica- Patent, and .in which diagrammatical perspective view of my device in operation.
Fi 2 is a sectionalelevation of a portion of a i uilding containing my device.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional elevation of one of the storage chambers of my device.
' Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the subject matter of Fig. 3. Figs. 5, 6 and 7 are ground plans of various arrangements of buildings to contain my device.
Like characters of reference indicate like parts through the several ings.
views of the draw- In general my invention consists of a plurality of elevators,
each elevator having 0 a plurality of superposed chambers therein adapted to receive a vehicle to be stored, and
means whereby each elevator may be operated so as to bring any desired chamber to the main floor of the building for the purpose of receiving or discharging a vehicle.
A series of such 1, indicated `by 7 8,
elevators is shown in Fig.
9 and 10, each having therein three receiving and storage chambers 11, 12 and 13.
Each elevator is operated by independent means of any convenient type,
that illustrated being a hydraulic elevator motor of the vertical type, which is a preferred construction because requiring no overropes or other device head s to interfere with moving the vehicles over the tops. of the elevators if desired.
. with the main floor 23, 1917. Serial N0. 170,567.
The particular motive power is not claimed asa part of my invention, that illustrated being well known to the art, and consisting of a cylinder 14 and a plunger 15, the latter being connected direct to the elevator.
The several floors 16 of the elevator chainbers may each be brought into registration 17 of the building for the purpose of receiving or discharging a vehicle 18, as shown in Fig. 1.
Each floor 16 slopes rearwardly, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, for the purpose of insuring that the vehicle contained therein shall always have a tendency to move toward the rear of the chamber and thus avoid the danger of the vehicle leaving the chamber at any time other than' as desired when the floor of the chamber registers-,with the iioor of the building.
Each ioor 16 is also crowned transversely toward the center thereof, as shown in Figs. l and 4, and at each edge thereof adjacent the side walls of the elevator is provided a longitudinally disposed trough 19 for the purpose of receiving the' drippage of oil, water or the like, from the vehicle, and directing the flow of the same to a drainage pipe 20 at the rear of the elevator, which pipe is connected to all said troughs lying vin the same vertical plane, as shown in Fig. 1. y
By means of the sloping arrangement of the iioors, and the troughs and pipe 20, each compartment or chamber is insured from receiving any drippage from the chamber above. 1
A pit 24: extends below the washroom floor 23 suiiiciently to allow the floor 16 of the upper elevator chamber to be brought into register therewith.
It is obvious that my device may be installed in many various arrangements within suitable buildings, and 1 have only illustrated three such arrangements.
In Fig. 5 is illustrated the plan view of a building having a central ioor 17a number of elevators upon each side thereof.
In Fig. 6 is illustrated the plan view Aof a and a( over the 'lat roof building having a floor 17b upon one side thereof and a number of elevators upon the op osite side of the building.
n Fig. 7 is illustrated -the plan o f a building having a number 'of closel. adjacent series of elevators, and a floor 1 c at one side thereof. 1
The arrangement shown in Fig. 7 is the most economlcal of ground space, and the vehicle is enabled to venter the chambers of any elevator in the rear series by passing or top of the elevators in front thereof.
Iy invention may be made of any size` and of any materials deemed suitable and and while I have illustrated and described a form of `construction and arrangement ofl parts found invention, l tion for Letters P atent all mechanical equivdesirable in materlalizing my to come within purview of my invention as appended claims. v
Having disclosed my invention so that others skilled in the art may be enabled to construct and to use the same, what I claim 4the building fl this character,-
as my own, I hereunto as new and wish ent is 1. A storage building divided into a to secure lby Letters Patplurality of respectively adjacent floorless stalls,
,of vertically movable respectively adjacent platforms, said platforms coacting to form in said pit; and said containers into alineinent withV said platforms. h In witness whereof I claim the foregoing' alix my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, at Portland, county of Multnomah, State of. Oregon, this 7th daynof May, 1917.
