To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN S. NAERY, a citizen of the United States, and residing at La Fayette, county ofTippecanoe, State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Friction Draft-Gears for Railway-Cars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to draft riggings for railroad cars and coniprises'an improvement in draft riggings of the friction type in which the draw bar of the car is engaged by friction devices which absorb the sudden shock caused in the coupling of cars and protect the :framework and running gear from injury.
The object ofthe invention is to provide a draft rigging of this class whichis simple 4and inexpensive to construct andy apply to railroad cars, which renders unnecessary theheavy springs and friction blocks found on other devices of this description, and in which the aibility of the apparatus to absorb shocks is directly proportional to the weight of the carl The invention will be fully' disclosed in the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in

The friction yoke 16 has two parallel arms, one of which passes on each side of the center pin 13 and each of the arms lies in directly the weight a slot 19 in the truck bolster center plate 15 so that the yoke cannot become accidentally displaced. f
As the yoke is held substantially longiall times by the draw bar, while the truck bolster and center plaite rotate as the car moves around curves, I have tapered the slot19 toward the center from each side of the plate so that the yoke will have sufficient play. The forward end of the yoke 16 is forked, one arm extending I over, and the other under the rear end of the draw bar 17. The pin 18Y passes through each of these forks and Athrough the draw bar, providing a substantial pivotal Connec.
The draw bar extends to the end of the car between the -usual 'sills or channels 20 21 secured to the end thereof. A portion of the draw bar between the coupler 21 and the pivot 18 comprises a yoke within which the followers 22 and 23 are held. These followers have between them the heavy coil spring 24 which assists the friction yoke in absorbing shocks inasmuch as the cheek plates 25 secured tothe sills 2O limit the motion of the followers in the usual manner, and insure that the spring 24 is compressed when the draw bar is moved in either direction.

vln Fig. 4 l have shown a modification in i which anti-friction rollers 26 are placed between the friction yoke and the two center plates in case it is desired to decrease the friction. It is apparent that the degree of resistance offered to the passage of the friction yoke between the center plate depends uponthe Weight of the car and its load. This is a very desirable feature inasmuch as the heavier the car is the greater the jar it is capable -of giving and the greater theshock absorbing power should be.
1When my invention is used' the heavy Ishocks 'transmitted by4 switching or in train service, do not in any way damage the draft sills or gear, or affect the loading, and a great saving in upkeep is made, as lWell as an original saving in installation over other devices of this character.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new yand desired to be secured by Letters Patent is y 1. The combination with a railroad car having a body bolster and a truck having a bolster, of a draft rigging including a slid! able member resting on the truck bolster and in turn supporting the body bolster whereby movement of the member is frictionally re- 4-sisted by its contact with said bolsters.
