Description

C. MARSH, 2nd.
Improvement in Cultivators.
I I 202:. 1- J8 I 1, 67,621, W1 n6 6 2%? 1] UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CYRUS MARSH, 2D, OF NATGHEZ, MISSISSIPPI.
IMPROVEMENT IN C ULTIVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 130,384, dated August 13, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
To allwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CYRUS MARSH, 2d, of Natchez, in the county of Adams and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and. useful Improvement in Garden-Cultivator; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompany drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention is designed especially for use in'the light soils of the south; and consists in the combination of pivoted handles having a peculiarly-constructed securing-iron with the main frame of the cultivator, and also in the general construction and arrangement of the machine as a whole, whereby it is peculiarly adapted for the special work for which it is designed.
In the drawing, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved cultivator with a portion of the wheel'broken away to show its adjusting mechanism. Fig. 2 represents a front elevation; Fig. 3, a perspective of the irons supporting the handles; and Fig. 4, a plan view.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to and are pivoted to the main frame near its front end, as shown. They are supported near their center by means of a V-shaped iron, b, the lower end of which is removably attached to the iron b upon the main frame.
0 0 represent the side beams, which correspond in length with the main beam A, and are provided with transverse slots adapted to receive the cross-bars a a, as shown. The
beams areadjustable upon the bars in a lateral direction, and are held in any desired position by means of a securing-pin, as shown. Each beam is provided with a shovel, D, attached to the beam by means of a shank, d, in any proper manner, and each beam has also a wheel, E, provided with a bearing-face, e, and a cutting flange, e, which wheel is attached in place by means of a slotted arm which permits its vertical adjustment.
By means of the described construction the machine is peculiarly fitted for the purposes for which it is designed. By adjusting the beams laterally, it is adapted either to work between the rows or upon both sides of a single row. By changing sides with the side beams, it is adapted to throw the dirt either to or from the rows. The wheels are readily adjusted to regulate the depth of the shovels.
By means of the cutting-flanges, the machine is guided with accuracy and case. If desired, the machine may be used without the wheels. The machine as a whole is exceedingly simple in its construction.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The machine described provided with the main frame A a a, the removable side beam 0, having wheels and shovels attached, as described, and pivoted handles B B provided with the V-shaped iron I), all constructed and operating substantially as described.
2. The pivoted handles B B, provided with the V-shaped irons b with right-angled flange, in combination with the main frame, as described, the iron being so arranged that it may be readily adjusted and be held by a single pin or screw.
This specification signed and witnessed this 11th day of May, 1872.
G. MARSH, 2D.
