Be it known that I, ALFRED O. Ennn'r; a citizen of the United States, residing at Woodstock, in the county of 'McI-Ienry and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Margin-Releases, of which the followingis a specification This invention relates to typewriters, and more particularly to the letter and margin spacing means, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a new and improved construction by means of which it is possible to write in the margin of the sheet upon which the typewriter is writing, and more particularly in the left-hand margin.
The further object of the invention is to provide new and improved means for operating the margin release from both ends of the typewriter carriage.
The invention consists in. the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of the parts.
In the accompanying drawing- Figure 1 is a plan view of a portion of a typewriter mechanism .to which the present invention is applied.

Fig. 4 is a rear elevation of a margin stop device with a stop therefor shown in section. In some typewriter constructions it is necessary to move the left-hand margin stop in, order to write in the left-hand margin and this involves the setting and resetting of the margin stopmechanism for each operation. In the present invention the lefthand margin stop in which it is set,.but by moving the rack the margin stop is released from the fixed stop on the typewriter frame to permit writing in the left-hand margin without interfering with the left-hand margin stop and without affecting its subsequent normal operation. Attached to one of the levers 7 is one end of a spring 12, the other end of which is attached to a pin 13, and this spring tends to hold the rack 3 downwardly in engagement with its pinion 4:. Mounted on the bar 1 for sliding movement longitudinally thereof is a margin stop 14 which has an angular notch 15 in its lower edge and upstanding lateral ears 16. Pivoted in the ears 16 is a lever 17 having a bent extremity 18 to engage the teeth of the bar and having an operating-knob 19 at the other end which has a projection 20 extending through the lever forming a guide for a spring 21 which is interposed between the lever and the margin stop 14 so that the spring tends to press. the extremity 18 in engagement with the teeth ofthe bar 1. In order to move the margin stop along the bar, the lever 17 is depressed by means of the handle 19 against the ten sion of the spring 21, and the extremity 18 is then freefrom engagement so that the margin stop can beshifted along the Iliar X- tending below the margin stop 14: and up at the sides thereof is a stop member 22 mounted on pivots 23 which project from the sides of the member 14. This stop member 22 has an angular portion 24: adapted to be seated in the angular notch 15 and it has a projecting extremity 25 which normally extends at an angle below the lower side of the member 14- in which is held by means of a spring 26 downwardly holding the angular portion 24 in'the notch 15. This, of course, will not aflect the position of the rack 3. The bar 1, however, is normally pressed in a direction to hold the screw 30 against the top of the rack by .means of an arm 33 and-a spring 34 attached thereto and to a suitable fixed portionof thecarriage frame. r p

I claim:- v 1. The combination with a margin stop having a movable pal t, and a bar on which .it'is mounted, of a pivotedrack, means for moving the rack, and means forming a connection between the stop and the rack for moving the said p rt of thestop when the rack'is rotated on its pivot.
2. The combination with a fixed bar and a margin stop adjustable thereon, of a pivoted escapement rack, means for moving the rack about itspivot, and an arm forming a part of and projecting from the margin stop and engaged by the rack when it is rotated.
'3. The combination with a margin stop bar, .of a pivoted rackyand amargin stop g adiustable upon the bar and including a movable part engaged andmoved by the rack when the latter is moved upon its pivot. 4. In a typewriter, the combination with a rotatable escapementmember, of an ad-' justable margin stop having a movable part, a fixed stopengaged by the margin stop part in one direction of movement, and. means formmg a' connection between the escapemargin stop ment member and the margin stop partfor releasing it from engagement with the fixed stop when the escapeinent member is rotated.

In a margin release for typewriters a stop fixed to the frame,and an adjustable mounted on the carriage and including a pivoted member normally in ition to engage the fixed stop, the member having a pro ecting arm by means of which it may be moved upwardlyout of-position -to engage the fixed stop.
10. In a -margin release, an adjustable margin stop having a pivoted stop member movable from an engaglng position with an arm ,projecting' therefrom, an engaging screw threaded in the end of the arm, and a pivoted rack movable upwardly to contact ire spring in the direction of the margin stop so that it will pass over the fixed stop.
12. A releasable margin stop comprising a member longitudinally adjustable for varying the margin and a stop member pivoted thereto, the outer end of which projects from the adjustable member and has an arm extending therefrom, a spring interposed between the stop member and the adjustable member, and an adjustable engagement device in the end of the arm by means of which the stop member is rotated against the tension of said spring.
13. In a. margin stop, a bar and housing slida'ble thereon having an angular notch in its lower edge, means for adjusting the posi tion of the housing along the bar, a stop member pivoted to the housing having an angular edge to engage the notch of the housing and with the stop each normally disposed at a distance from the. housing, a spring tending to hold this member in engagement with the notch of the housing, and an arm projecting from the stopmember engageable at its outer end to raise the member against the tension of its spring thereby moving it out of engagement with the said notch.
14. In a typewriter, the combination with a toothed bar, of a margin stop mounted thereon comprising an ad ustment lever for engaging the teeth of the bar and a pivoted stop member one end of which extends at an angle from the margin stop with a spring tending normally to hold it in such position, an arm with an adjustable engagement pin threaded in the end of the arm, an escapement ra-ck pivoted on an axis substantially parallel with the bar on which the margin stop is adjustable, theengagement pin being engaged by the rack. when it is moved on its pivots, and means at each end of the rack for rotating it upon its pivots thereby moving the pivoted stop member against its spring.
