Description

J. S. K I RK PATRICK.
'Nut-Locks.
Patented Aug. 13,1872.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
JOSEPH 4SCOTT KIRKPATRICK, OF PUNTA ARENAS, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN LOCK-NUTS.
Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 130,377, dated August 13, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
.locks which have a bolt providedwith a right and left hand screw-thread,l and employ in connection therewith two nuts, and consist-s in thespecitic construction of the outer nut, by means of which the two aresecurelyclamped together, as" will be fully/described herein' after. Y i
In the drawing, Figure l represents an elevation, partially in section, of my improved nut-lock; and Figs. 2 and 3, views of the nut detached.
To enable others skilled in the art to make a-nd use my invention, I will now proceed to describe fully its construction and manner of operation.
A represents the bolt, which is provided with the usual head a and the shank al, which latter terminates in the threaded portions a2 a3 of different diameters, as shown. B and G represent nuts adapted to fit the threaded portions a2 a3 of the bolt, one of which is right and the other left hand. These threaded portions areof such relative length that the inner nut, when in place for securing the article which it isV designed to hold, extends far enough over the thread part a3 to permit the inner face of the nut G to enga-ge with it. The nut O, which is preferablycast of steel, is provided with'a circular ridge, or its equivalent, having a sharpl edge adapted to cut into the outer face of the inner nut.
The operation is as follows: The bolt having been properly adjusted, the inner nut is screwed vtightly to its place and the outer nut also to its place, the revolving motion of the latter, however, being in an. opposite direction to the former. By screwing the outer nut tightly upon the inner, the sharp projecting edge of the former cuts into the outer face of the latter, by which means the two are firmly united togetherand one cannot move without the other. y
By means of this construction a very simple but effective nut-lock is obtained, which can be produced at small cost.
Having thus fully described lny invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The nut C with its projecting edge, in cornbination with nut B and bolt A, provided with the right and left hand screw-threads, as described.
This specification signed and witnessed this 28th day of December, A. D. 1871. Y
