TED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NICOLAY KNUDTZON FOUG-NER, OF CHRISTIANIA, NORWAY, ASSIGNOR T0 FOUGNER AMERICAN STEELCONCRETE SHIPBUILDING COMPANY, OF WILMINGTON, DELA- FLOATING CRAFT OIE REINFORCED CONCRETE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 13, 1919;
Application filed January 24, 1917. Serial No. 144,183.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NICOLAY KNUDTZON FOUGNER, a subject of the King of Norway, residing at Christiania, Norway, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Floating Craft of Reinforced Concrete; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to Which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a rt of this specification.
The present invention relates to reinforced concrete vessels such as barges, lighters and a similar floating craft and particularly to sea-going craft of this kind.
The object of the invention is to produce a vessel having a double bottom and which can be molded in one operation.
The annexed drawing shows a cross-sectional view of a double bottom of a vessel embodying my invention.
1 is the bottom proper which is molded in the usual manner on a compact bottom plate and is armed with longitudinal iron rods 2 and 1 and cross bars 5 and 6.
7 is the inner bottom which is separated from the outer one by lengthwise compart ments 8 which may if desired be subdivided at intervals by cross partitions.
Perforated iron sheets or iron netting 10 bent to suit the cross sectional shape of the water tight compartment and the width of which may amount to to 1 meter, are rough cast on the underside with a suitable plastering and arranged lengthwise in parallel rows so as to confine spaces of the desired shape. Vertical reinforcements 11 are thereupon mounted, which may be bent as shown on the drawing in U- or T-form together with longitudinal reinforcements 12 which are connected with the top of the reinforcements 11.
There are further provided longitudinal reinforcements 13 on the top of the plates 10 and cross reinforcements 14: extending from plate to plate above to the bulkheads 9.
The whole structure is thereupon molded in one casting operation.
As will be seen from the drawing the under edges of the plates 10 are supported by thicker portions 15 of the outer bottom 1, which portions may suitably be molded bodily with the bulkheads 9.
Claims:
1. A reinforced concrete bottom for vessels, comprising an outer bottom provided at intervals with vertical members projecting above the inner face thereof, a plurality of inverted U-shaped foraminous metal plates having a coating of plaster on one side and arranged on the outer bottom with their coated sides inward and forming a plurality of longitudinal compartments, the ends of adjacent plates being spaced apart and between which the vertical members of the outer bottom project, concrete on the plates and between the ends thereof, and longitudinal and transverse reinforcements embedded in the concrete.
2. A reinforced concrete bottom for vessels, comprising an outer bottom having at intervals thickened portions inclined in opposite directions and having vertical members at the center of said thickened portions and projecting above the same, a plurality of inverted U -shaped foraminous plates plastered on their inner sides and having their ends resting upon the thickened portion of the outer bottom with the ends of adjacent plates spaced apart and between which the vertical members of the outer bottom project, concrete on the plates and between .the ends thereof and longitudinal, and transverse reinforcements embedded in the concrete, the transverse reinforcements being arranged above the vertical members of the outer bottom and extending partially over adjacent plates.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
NIUOLAY KNUDTZON FOUGNER.
Witnesses:
