Description
UNITED STATES PATENT onnron.
ORVILLE ilrnivnunn, 0F MQUND my, KANSAS.
RIDING ATTACHMENT FOB, CULTIVATORS.
Application filed August 17, 1917. Serial No. 186,741. i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORVILLE D. BENDURE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mound City, in the county 'of Linn, State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Riding Attachments for Cultivators; and I do hereby declarethe this character whereby the driver will be more comfortably placed on the machine and can more readily manipulate the shovels of the cultivator.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing:
Figure l is a side elevation of a portion of a cultivator showing my improved riding attachment in connection therewith.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view take on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing 10 represents the arch of the cultivator which includes the oppositely extending axle portions 11 for the ground engaging wheels 12. Secured to the upper central portion of the arch is the usual tongue 13, one portion of which extends a. suitable distance to the'rear of the arch and carries the usual hooks 14 for holding the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 13, 1919.
ofthe portions of the arch at opposite sides of the tongue. An angular U-sha'ped plate 19 connected to the forward portions of the bars, holds said bars in proper spaced relation. By means of these notches 16, the bars 16 can be moved longitudinally with respect to the tongue and thus regulate the distance the seat 20 is desired to the rear of the cultivator. A second U'shaped plate 21 connects the rear portions of the bars 16 together. The seat 20 is secured on the rear ends of the bars 16 by means of the usual clip 22 and bolt 23.
The beams of the cultivator are disposed in pairs, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and connecting these beams in pairs are the transverse braces 24. Secured respectively toeach of the braces, and to one of each pair of beams, is a clip or clamp 25, a bar 27 being secured to and extending between each pair of the clips and havin suitably secured thereon a stirrup or foot plate 28.
Connected to each of the portions 17 is the forward end of a chain 29, the rear end being connected to the eye 30 of one of the beams.
By this arrangement the weight of the driver, on the seat, causes the depression of the rear ends of the bars 16 with the result that the forward ends of the bars will exert an upward pull 011 the chains 29, whereby the beams and cultivator shovels can be more easily handled by the driver.
The attachment is extremely simple in construction and can easily and quickly be applied to or removed from the cultivator. By adjusting the chains the balancing of the weight of the driver and the resistance of the dragging action of the cultivator shovels, can. be regulated.
It will be noted that the rear ends of the bars 16 are turned downwardly to permit to interchangeably receive portions of the them to pass inwardly between the usual beam arch of the cultivator, a seat carried by the 15 supporting hooks 14.- Each of the handles rear ends of the notched members, and 31 is provided with a hand grip 31 by chains connected to the forward ends of the 5 means of which said handles are manipunotched members and to the cultivator lated. s I beams.
WVhat is claimed is: In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature 20 The combination with the tongue, the in the presence of two witnesses. arch, and cultivator beams of a cultivator,
10 of a riding attachment therefor including ORVILLE D. BENDURE.
a pair of notched members disposed longi- Witness-es; tudinally at the sides of the tongue of the G. H. LrrTELL, cultivator, the said notches being arranged C. E. PORTER.
