APPLICATION FILED FEB. 4. 1918.

other on msm mmmmmm.
Application filed February 4, 1918. Serial 15rd. 215,250.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, Isaac L. SANGER,a
citizen of the United States, residing at Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clasps or Fasteners for Garments, of which the following is a speci fication.
My invention has relation to an improve ment in clasps or fasteners for garments and in such connection it relates more particularly to the construction and arrangement of parts constituting the clasp or fastener. p p p p The clasp or fastener of my presentinvem tion is especially designed to take the place of hooks and eyes, buttons and button holes and the old types of fasteners used on womens garments. They may, however, be used on gloves to replace the ordinary clasp or button. p
The underlying thought in the designing of my clasp or fastener has been to do away with the annoyance and inconvenience heretofore experienced by women in the separation of the fastening, thus-The hook and eye when attached to overlapping edges of silk or filmy textures could not be readily separated without tearing the material and the ordinary glove fastener when adapted for use on overlapping edges of stouter material could not be separated without the insertion of the finger nails between the ball and socket members and frequent breaking of the nails in an effort to pry the same apart.
A further object of my invention is to provide a clasp or fastening of two memhere, the plate carrying the ball crossing the plate carrying the socket at right angles to enable the members to lock or fasten, the plates of the two members being brought to parallel relationship when said members are disengaged.
The nature and scope of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, in which- Figure 1 is a top or plan view of my improved fastening with the two members interlocked.
Fig. 2 is an end elevational view of the m 1.v i
. Speeificationof Letters Patent.
Patented Ma 13,1919.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken online 3-3 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 4 is a'longitudinal sectional view of the fastening with the members disengaged.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the plate carrying the socket 2 of the fasten- 1ng and 3 represents theplate carrying the ball member 4. In the preferred form of is stamped out of a single piece of metal, the general shape of the plate 1 being oblong. The rim or periphery of the plate 1 is raised to form a flange 5 desi spring locking device 6 w ich projects from the flange 5 inward to traverse the base or neck of the socket 2, which base or neck is slotted or slit as at 7 (see Fig. to permit the spring device 6 to traverse the base or neck of the socket 2.
The plate 1 is also provided adjacent to each end with a downwardly extending rounded lug or cam projection 8. These lugs 8 are preferably formed by deforming the plate at these points during the stamping operation.
The plate 1 is likewise provided at its ends with perforations or openings 9 by means of which the plate 1 may be sewed or stitched to the garment.
Theplate 3 carrying the stud 4 is like- Wise of substantially oblong shape and is preferably formed by stamping out a single piece of metal to the shape required, the stud 4 being preferably hollow and having a contracted neck 10 into which the spring 6 of plate 1 fits to lock the stud 4 in the socket 2.
The plate 3 is provided, adjacent to each end with an upwardly extending rounded lug orcam projection 11. These lugs 11 are arranged in alinement with lugs 8 of plate 1 so that when said plates 1 and 2 are brought into alinement with each other, the lugs 8 will ride on the lugs 11 to separate the fastening as clearly shown in Fig. 4. When, however, the plates 1 and 2 cross each other as in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the lugsll are clear of lugs 8 and the members of the fastening may be brought together to interlock.
In use the two plates 1 and 2 are so sewed to the parts to be fastened together that they will cross as in Fig. l and the ball or stud 4 may be forced into the socket 2 past the spring 6 which locks the ball or stud in constructionthe plate 1 with the socket 2 the socket. To disengage the plates and unfasten the garment, the ends of plates 1 and 2 are pressed by thumb and finger until the plates are in alinement. 'The lugs l land" 8 during this latter operation will ride on each other to force the stud out of the socket and hence the plates will be separated to unfasten the garment.
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In device of the character described, a plate of substantially oblong shape, a socket carried by said plate, a spring carried by the plate and projecting through the neck of the socket, a second plate of substantially oblong shape and arranged in lockingposition so that its ends project beyond the sides of the socket plate, a ball carried by said second plate and lugs carried by each plate, said lugs coacting to force saidplates apart to release the ball from the socketv when said plates are brought into alineinent, the arrangement being such that when the respective projecting ends of one plate are brought into alinement with the projecting ends of the other plate, the two plates are released from looking engagement.
2. In a device of the character described, a plate, a socket having a slotted, contracted neck and projecting from the plate, a spring held to said plate'and projecting through the slotted neck of the socket, a second plate, a stud having a contracted neck and fitting into the socket, said spring arranged to enter the neck of the stud to lock the stud in said socket, said plates being of substantially oblong shape and crossing each other in locked position, the projecting ends of the respective plates being adapted to be brought into alinement to release the fastening.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
ISAAC L. SANGER.
