SPECIFICATION.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LEwIs GInBs, of (Janton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flows; and that the following is a full, clear, and exact specification thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the said invention.

My invention relates to an improved construction and attachment for the plow-colter, the object being to obtain a solid and substantial attachment of the colter to the standard and share; and it consists in the combination of a clamping-bolt with inclined head, with an elbow-colter having the arm beveled on both edges, and a standard having an overhanging beveled lip, the several parts being arranged so that the colter can be firmly clamped between the beveled lip of the standard and the inclined bolt-head, as is hereinafter more fully shown.

In the accompanying drawing, Figures 1 and 2 are furrow and land side views of a plow embodying my invention. Figs. 3 and 4 are side and rear views of the standard, showing the colter attachments. Figs. 5 are views of the colter and clamping-bolt. Figs. 6 are front, side, and rear views and plan of the land-side.

The plow shown is of an ordinary construcparticularly described, as its details are well known, with the exception of my particular improvements, which I will now describe.

On the standard A is cast a lug, B, the under edge of which is of the angular form seen in Fig. 4, and the projection K is also cast on the rear face of the standard to form a seat for the nut J on the clamping-bolt I. This bolt I has a hooked-shaped head, t, which is flattened out, as shown, and is passed up through the hole a in the standard, shown in Fig. 3, in the inclined position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 4, being secured in the standard by the nut J, as shown. The elbow-colter F G is made with an arm, G, having its two edges 9 g beveled off, as shown in Figs. 4: and 5, and its lower end f rests in a groove, e,

The upper beveled edge 9 of the arm G fits under the inclined face of the lug B, and the hooked head iof to the lower the belt I hooks over the lower beveled edge I g of the arm G, from which it is seen that when'the bolt I is drawn up the colter-arm G will be firmly held to the standard by the combined action of the inclined faces of the lug B and bolt-head i on the beveled edges 9 g, and the action of the bolt I drawing up on the colter-arm G, back of the lug B, which serves as a fulcrum, will tend to press the end f of the cutter-arm F firmly onto the colter, thus securing the colter rigidly in position. The cutterarm F, instead of being bent directly over to form the arm G, is carried up in a triangular form, H, above the line 00 of the upper edge of the arm G, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 5, so that any sod or stubble passing up toward the beam on the colter will pass back and drop down when it reaches the point H, and by so dropping over the elevated point H to the arm G will be sufficiently loosened to be readily drawn off by the furrow, instead of hanging on the colter and thus choking the operation of the plow. The lower part D of the land-side,'being usually the first part to wear out, is now generally made separate from the face-piece 0, so that either part can be removed and replaced when worn and itis often a matter of some difficulty to get the plow-handle M and land-side pieces 0 D rigidly secured together, especially when either part is replaced by a new piece. The detachable handle-piece L is used to obviate this difficulty, and it consists of a base having a base flange, m, and upper flange n, to receive the bottom thrust and upwardtending strain of the, plow-handle M, the lower end'of which fits onto and under said flanges, as indicated by dotted lines in Figs. 6. The back of the piece L fits up to the pieces 0 D, as shown in Figs. 6, and the bolt is secures it piece D, while the bolt Z passes through both the handle M, handle-piece L, and upper piece 0, thus securing the handle and land-side pieces together in a solid manner. The flange n also serves to prevent the splitting of the lower end of the handle M while pressing on the upper end of the handle to raise the point of the plow.
