To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that ll, EMIL E. EHRLIQH, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Kankakee, in the county of Kankakee and State of llllinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Power- Driven Meat-gaws, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to power driven meat saws, and has for its object the provision of an improved mounting for a saw of this nature so that a saw may be used and properly adjusted to any position over a table, and may thereupon be operated to saw ofi' parallel slices from meat or similar material carried by the table.
In general, my invention contemplates a hanging structure carrying the saw together with suitable means for operating the saw, all of which mechanism may be suitably carried by a traveling carriage, through the agency of which carriage parallel slices of meat may be readily out off.
My invention further contemplates the mounting of the saw in such manner that its inclination to the horizontal may be varied at will, thus-to accommodate for the different conditions under which it is necessary to saw meat. My inventionfurther contemplates the counter-balancing of the saw structure in such a way that it may be brought down upon the meat to be sawed or pushed upwardly out of operative position, suitable means keeping the same in whatever vertical position it happens to be placed by the operator.
My invention further contemplates the provision of means suitably controlled from one of the handles of the saw whereby to control the actuating mechanism which causes the reciprocation of the saw. All of these features, together with others, will be more readily apparent from a detailed description of one form of carrying out my invention which is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:

My improved device contemplates the use of two rails 10, 11, upon which a suitable carriage 12 is operable to and fro. This carriage has suitable wheels 13 for this purpose. The track 10 carries a rack 14 and the carriage 12 carries a pivotally mounted pinion 15, which pinion is suitably controlled by the hand wheel 16. The rotation of the hand wheel rotates the pinion 1'5 and thereby moves the carriage 12 gradually from place to place to control the width of the parallel slices which it may be desired to saw. The carriage 12 also carries a suitable motor 17 and this motor has a friction wheel 18 which cooperates with a second friction wheel 19, the friction wheel 19 in turn driving suitable mechanisin to reciprocate the saw carriage 20 as will presently appear. The friction wheel 19 is fastened to the shaft 21 and this shaft is carried in the bearing 22, the

The shaft 21 at its lower extremity is fastened to one end of the flexible shaft 25. the other end of this flexible shaft in turn driving the shaft 26. The shaft 26 through the agency of the crank 27 fixedly: secured thereto drives the connecting rod 28 to thereby reciprocate the friction segment 29. This friction segment frictionally engages the leather strip 30, which leather strip in turn is fixedly secured to theisaw framework 20 to thereby cause reciprocation of the saw framework when the motor 17 is operating. The saw framework carries a suitably mounted saw 31. The shaft 26 is carried by r neoasea an arm 32, which arm forms part of a support 33, this support being fastened to the vertical shaft 34. This framework 33 as more clearly shown in Fig. 4 has a slot 35 in which the block 36 is slidably mounted,
which block is pressed downwardly by the spring 37. The block 36 carries the shaft 38 to which the friction segment 29 is secured, thus to provide a rotatable mounting for this friction segment, and at the same time through the agency of the spring 37 forcing this friction segment tightly against the cooperating leather drive way 30. The framework 33 ends in an extension 39, which extension carries the stud 40. This stud has the jaws 41 which pivotally support the hanger 42. This hanger 42 is fixedly secured to the rod 43 to which the handles 44 are attached. The saw framework 20 is reciprocatingly mounted upon the rod 43 through the agency of the slots 45 provided in this framework 20 and bolts 46 provided with suitable heads 47, thus to prevent dislocation of the saw framework and at the same time permit its reciprocation along the rod 43 whenever the friction segment 29 is oscillated. The rod 34 is carried in a sleeve or housing 48 which depends from the carriage 12 and is fixedly secured thereto, the shaft 34 being loosely carried by the housing 48 and being supported in position'by the rope 49, this rope 49 passing over the pulley 50 and then over the pulley 51, thence over the pulley 52 and its extremity is held in place at the hook 53. A- spring 54 holds the pulley 52, this spring having the ri ht tension to accommodate for the weight 0 all of the structure supported by the rope 49 so that the saw and its carrying mechanism can be pushed into any particular vertical position by the operator and then will be main tamed in that position through the agency of the spring 54.
Thus the entire saw structure is yieldingly supported upon the carriage and the saw itself may be reciprocated through the agency of the motor 17, also carried by the carriage. Thus the entire apparatus is mounted upon the carriage 12 and reciprocates with it whenever this carriage is moved to and fro along the rails 10, 11. Normally, when sawing parallel slices the saw is turned at right angles to the position it occupies in Fig. 1 and then the carriage position through the agency of the hand wheel 16 is adjusted so as to cut slices of the proper thickness. Due to the pivotal mount ing of the arm 43 through the agency of the element 42 the saw may be tilted angularly to the horizontal in both directions so as to accommodate for conditions which make it desirable. -Due to the: fact that the shaft 34 is loosely held in the housing 48 the saw structure may be readily rotated into any position about the axis of the shaft 34.
The motor 17 has a brake Wheel 55 with which a brake 56 may cooperate, this brake through the agency of the spring 57 being normally held against the brake wheel. An electromagnet- 58 is provided, however, which when energized attracts this armature 59, thus to release the brake and permit the motor to operate. Push buttons 60 and 61 are provided in the handle 44. The circuit conditions are more clearly illustrated in Fig. 3 where the conductors 62 and 63 come from any suitable source of power.
In the claims I use the words meat saw to of course mean a saw used by butchers, although this saw of course is adapted not alone to saw meat but also bones or whatever else it may be found necessary to saw in a butcher shop with a saw of this kind.
From what has been described the nature of my invention will be readily clear to those skilled in the art.
Having however thus described one form which my invention may take, what I claim as new and desire'to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A power driven saw structure of the character described comprising a saw support, a reciprocable saw carried thereby, a movable carriage carrying said saw support, means associated with said saw support for reciprocating said saw, manually controlled operating mechanism for positioning said saw and carriage in a plurality of different positions so as to permit said saw to operate in a plurality of parallel planes whereby it is adapted to cut slices of meat, and means whereby said saw may be tilted vertically independently of said carriage.
2. A power driven saw structure of the character described comprising a support, a reciprocable saw carried thereby, a movable carriage carrying said saw support, means interposed between said saw support and said carriage for rigidly suspending and substantially counter-balancing said saw support so as to permit vertical adjustment thereof, means associated with said saw support for reciprocating said saw, and means for adjusting said saw and carriage to permit said saw to operate in a plurality of parallel planes.
3. A saw structure of the character described comprising a saw support, a recipro cable saw carried thereby, a movable carriage carrying said saw support, a runway for said carriage, means associated with said saw support for reciprocating said saw, and means for adjusting said saw and carriage to permit said saw to operate in a plurality of parallel planes, said last aforesaid means including a hand wheel for controlling the position of said carriage relative .to said runway.
4. A saw structure of the character described comprising a saw support, a reciprocable saw carried thereby, a movable carriage carrying said saw support, a runway for said carriage, means associated with said saw support for reciprocating said saw, and means for adjusting said saw and carriage to permit said saw to operate in a plurality of parallel planes, said last aforesaid means including a hand wheel and a rack and pinion interposed between said hand wheel and said runway.
5. A power driven saw structure of the character described comprising a saw support, a reciprocable saw carried thereby, a movable carriage from which said saw support is suspended, and a rigid verticallyadjustable hanger interposed between said carriage and said saw support to counter-balance the weight of said saw support whereby said saw support may occupy any one of a plurality of vertical positions relative to said carriage.
6. A power driven saw structure of the character described comprising a saw sup port, a handle for said support, a reciprocable saw carried by said saw support, a
movable carriage carrying said saw support, rigid suspending means interposed between said saw support and said carriage to permit of a vertical movement of said saw support whereby said saw support may occupy any desired number of substantially parallel vertical positions, and driving means associated with said saw support for reciprocating said saw.
7. A sawing machine comprising an overhead track, a truck adapted to travel on said track, a frame, a saW mounted to reciprocate in said frame, a bearing on the truck, a vertical shaft attached to said frame and mounted for rotary and longitudinal adjustment in said bearing and counter-balanced to support the frame, saw reciprocati'ng mechanism mounted on the frame, and
driving means mounted on the truck and connected with said saw reciprocating mechanism for operating said saw.
8. A sawing machine comprising an overhead track, a truck adapted to travel on said track, a frame, a saw mounted to reciprocate in said frame, means interposed between said truck and said frame to permit of a rotary and longitudinal adjustment of said frame relative to said truck, saw reciprocating mechanism mounted on the frame, and driving mechanism mounted on the truck and connected with said saw recipro cating mechanism for operating said saw.
9. A sawing machine comprising an overhead track, a truck adapted to travel on said track, a frame, a saw mounted to reciprocate in said frame, means interposed between said truck and said frame to permit of a rotary and longitudinal adjustment of said frame relative to said truck, means for counter-balancing the weight of said frame, saw reciprocating mechanism mounted on the frame, and driving mechanism mounted on the truck and connected with said saw reciprocating mechanism for operating said saw.
10. A power driven saw structure of the character described comprising a saw support, a reciprocable saw carried thereby, a vertically disposed hanger for said support, a reciprocable sector carried by said hanger, and a plate carried by the saw and in operatively frictional engagement with a peripheral face of the sector forreciprocating the saw.
