Description

Patented Aug 6,1872
aliiilaim-f W. C. 8L P. T. KENNEDY.
Y Improvement in Varnish Packages.
UNITED STATES PATENT FFIO'E.
WILLIAM C. KENNEDY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., AND PETER T. KENNEDY, OF
` BRADFORD, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT. IN VARNISH-PACKAGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 130,225, dated August 6, 1872.
Specification describing anew and useful Improvement in Varnish-Package, invented by WILLIAM C. KENNEDY, of the city, county, and State of New York, and PETER T. KEN- NEDY, of Bradford, in the county of McKean and State of Pennsylvania.
Our invention relates t0 an improved kegv for holding and transporting varnish, and in construction it is an improvement over the paint-keg of A. L. Freeman, patented June 4, 1867, N o. 65,368, which we desire to disclaim. The improvement consists in giving an arched form to the metal head, to which the lifting handle or bail is applied, and in iittin g its circular edge in a V-shaped croze, as and for the purposes hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure lis a vertical section of the vessel taken on the line x of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a top view, showing the iron head.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawing, A represents the body of the keg, and B one of the heads thereof, both of which are formed of wood and fitted together in the usual way. The other head, C, is made of metal, preferably sheet metal, and is concavo-convex in form, the convex side being outward. We thus secure a certain spring or elasticity in the head, so that its edge will fit snugly in the V-shaped croze G under all the conditions of strain or shrinkage and swelln g incident to or attending the use of the keg-a desideratum in kegs of this class. The head O is provided with ears D D, for attachment of a bail, E, and with a lling tube or orice, F, near the center.
Thus constructed and applied, the head C is capable of resisting the blows or heavy pressure to which such packages -are often subjected, while its connection with the keg is more secure than would be the case with a wooden head of the ordinary form.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of a concavo-convex metal head, C, with a wooden body or keg, A, provided with a V-shaped croze, G, as shown and described, for the purpose specified.
