, Specification of Letters Patent.
SEALED CONTAINER TO FACILITATE THE OPENING THEREOF.
' i Application filed May 29, 1917. Serial Ito. 1713M.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHAnnEs GRANT CAMP- .BELL CHRISTIE, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Telarah, Yarmouth Road, Strathfield, near Sydney, in the State of New South Wales, in the Commonwealth of Australia, have invented new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Sealed Containers'to Facilitate the Opening Thereof, of which the following is a specification.
This invention refers to containers which when closed are sealed generally by paper as a wrapper or label pasted over the closure though sometimes by paper like fabric or by other material which may be easily severed -or parted by a cord or fine wire and which containers may be bottles with a plug or stopper or a cork or jars or the like with a plug or stopper or a cap or and more commonly metal cans with a cap or cover or a hinged lid. And this invention relates .to improvements whereby the sealing of the closure is simply attained and means for the destruction of the seal provided for whereb the destruction of the seal -may be quickly e fected and whereby the removal of the cork, the plug, the cap or the cover 01' the opening of the lid is much facilitated.
'The characteristic or main principle of this invention is comprised in the feature that-after the close of the container is effected a thread or twine or wire hereinafter termed the cutting cord is wound once around the container or around the plug or the stopper or the cap or the cover or the lid (each plug, stopper, cap, cover or lid being hereinafter termed the closure) at or near the exposed edge of either tl'lGCOIltillIfiI or the closure where it meets the edge or ody of the other. The seal or label or wrapper' is then applied by pasting or otherwise leaving a protruding end of the cutting cord the same to diiferent'containerswill now be.
exposed and the fast end of this cutting cord is placed between the meeting parts of the container and the closure and it is preferably provided with a knot or stop or loop whereby the closure is withdrawn or lifted from the container as said cord is being pulled out of'position. I
But in order that the invention may be clearly understood various applications of described with reference to the drawings,
accompanying and forming part of this complete specification.
improvements applied thereto and showing respectively the container closed and sealed and the container with seal severed and lid raised. Fig. 7 is a view of a cutting cord with a stop at one end. Fig. 8 is a sectional elevation of the neck of a bottle with the present improvements applied thereto. Fig. 9 is an elevation of the cork of said bottle with the loop of the cutting cord therethrough. Fig. 10 is a view of a cutting cord with a loop acting as a stop at one end.
And Fig. 11 is a sectional elevation of the neck of a jar with the present improvements applied thereto.
In closing a removable cap container 11 (Figs. 1 and 2) the cord 6 is laid over the cap 8 and the stops 9 are placed within the open container top or a loop 13 (as in Fig. 10) is somewhat loosely placed over the cap 8 and said cap pushed upon said top. And in sealing the closed container 5 the free end 7 of the cutting cord 671 is wound around the container 11 at or under the edge of the rim 10 of the cap and the sealing label or Patented Apr. 29, rare.
wrapper is pasted thereover and on the container as ordinarily but an overlapping end of the cord is left free and protrudes beyond the overlap of the label or wrapper.
To free thecap 8 from the container the protruding end 7 of the cutting cord 67 is pulled thus severing or parting the label and destroying the seal and allowing the cap 8 to be removed as ordinarily. When the stops 9 or'loop 13 is used a finger is inserted under the cross over or exposed part of the cord and the cap is removed from the container by the loop 13 pulling said cap ofi' or likewise the stops 9 revent said cord from freeing itself until t e edge of the cap rim reaches the top edge of the container and so frees the cap.
lin closing a bottle container 12 in order to prevent an air space being formed as when a, loop is placed entirely around the cork the end of the cutting cord 6 is threaded through an orifice 13 previouslymade in the cork and then looped as at 13 on the cutting cord 6 and is placed longitudinally around the cork or plug 14 (Figs. 8, 9 and 10) the latter is pressed into the neck of the container 12 and the free end of cutting cord 7 is then wound around the neck 15 of the container 12. The sealing wrapper or capsule 16 is nOW pasted over said'cord and on the container flattening the prOtllldiIlg portion of loop 13 upon the top or end of the cork or plug 14 and leaving the free end 7 of the cord 6 protruding beyond the edge of the sealing wrapper 16.
To free the plug 14 from the container 12 the protruding end of the cord 7 is pulled cutting up through the wrapper 16 and pulling up the loose protruding portion of loop 13 so that a finger may be placed therein freeing the stopper or cap 18 and allowing same to be removed from the container 17.
In closing a metal container 20 having a hinged lid 21 (Figs. 5 and 6) the end of cord 6 bearing a stop 9 is placed within the open top of the container the hinged lid 21 closed or shut thereon the loose end of the cord wound around said container 20 at the edge of the flange 22 of said lid and the label or wrapper 23 pasted thereover and on the container and the lid with the end of the cord protruding from the overlap of.
said label or wrapper.
T 0 free and lift the lid 21 the cord end 7 is pulled the cord 6 thus severing-the wrapper 23 and lifting the lid the stop 9 or long end of the cord within the container 20 on the end of cord 7 allowing the cord to pull the lid up until the edge of the flange 22 thereon has reached or nearly reached the top of the container when the lid can be raised'or opened further as desired.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a container provided with a flanged closure and a frangible seal, means for rupturing said seal and opening said closure.
a portion of said filament wrapped about said container adjacent to the line of joinder of said closure and container.
. 3. In a container provided with a flanged closure and a frangible seal, means for rupturing said seal and opening said closure consisting of a filament having two stops attached thereto at intervals, said stops depending inside the container at opposite sides thereof, the filament intermediate the stops passing between the container and flanged closure and across the top outside of the latter, a portion of said filament being wrapped about said container adjacent the line of joinder of said flanged closure and the container and secured beneath the seal, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name t this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
