JOSEPH SHAW GAUNT AND HARRY DYSON, OF MANCHESTER, ENG-LAN D.
LAPPET FOR SPINNING AND LIKE MACHINES.
raoaoae.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, J osnrrr SHAW GAUNT and HARRY DYSON, of Manchester, in the county of Lancaster, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Lappets for Spinning and like Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the present invention is the improvement of lappets and thread guides for spinning and like machines and more particularly to provide improved means of securing firmly in position a removable eyelet, which when out by the yarn or thread can be easily removed and replaced by a new one.
According to this invention a porcelain or other suitable eye is held in position by means of a resilient bifurcated holder secured to the lappet by a bolt in the usual manner. The eye is suitably formed to fit between the two members of the bifurcated holder and the parts are so arranged that the eye is firmly gripped by the said members being forced together when the holder is secured by the bolt to the lappet. The eyelet may be so formed that the two members of the holder must be pushed apart before the eyelet can be removed aswill be further described.
The forward portion of the bifurcated holder can be formed with splayed projections adapted to guide the yarn into the eye and also with laterally extending slots adapted to prevent the yarn from flying out.
The lappet may be secured to the lappet board in any convenient manner, for exam.- ple, by hinges with elongated holes to per- Init lateral adjustment.
In order that the invention may be better understood a sheet of drawings is appended in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the bifurcated holder and the lappet.
Fig. 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and shows the front part of the lappet.
Figs. 3 and a show the removable eyelet in sectional plan and elevation.
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing a modification.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all of the figures.
1 represents a laterally compressible bifurcated holder, formed with a suitable circular opening 2, the sides of which form jaws adapted to receive and grip the porcelain or Specification of Letters Patent. Patented App, 29, 19 19,

other eyelet l2; splayed wings 3, to facilitate the entrance of the yarn, and notches 4, to prevent the yarn from flying out again. The holder is provided with a positioning member, here shown as a recess 5, at the inner ends of said gripping-jaws. The eyelet 12 is provided with the usual yarn-receiving slot 13 at one side, and is provided with a compleniental positioning member, here shown as a projection 5 adapted to enter the recess 5 and prevent the introduction of the eyelet except in the correct position, said projection being diametrically opposite the slot 13. The bifurcated holder ispreferably made of suitable thickness to fit in a corresponding groove 1", in the peri hery of the eyelet. In the lappet 7 a suita le slot 7 a is formedv to receive a bolt 8, said bolt having a head and a nut adapted to exert clamping pressure simultaneously on the lappet and the holder. The rear portion of the holder 1 is provided with a slot 6, through which the bolt also passes so that the holder can be adjusted inward or outward on the lappet so far as the limits of the slot 6 permit. The holder 1 is so formed that its natural spring is not necessarily sufiicient to grip the eyelet with the requisitefirmness until the holder is fastened to the lappet by the bolt 8. As shown by Figs. 1 and 2, the edge portions 7 of the lappet are beveled to form an angle greater than a right angle with the sides of the lappet, and the edge portions 9 of the two members of the bifurcated holder 1 are correspondingly beveled. When the bolt 8 is loosened the holder can be adjusted inward or outward as required, and as soon as the bolt is again tightened, the bifurcations of the holder are pressed together by the beveled edge portions and firmly grip the eyelet, the holder being therefore simultaneously secured to the lappet in the re quired position and caused to grip the eyelet. Other forms than that shown in Fig. 4: may be adapted without departing from the spirit of the invention. For instance, the bolt 8 may be provided with a washer 10 formed with tapered faces 10 to engage correspondingly tapered edge portions 9 of the holder, as shown in Fig. 5.
It will be seen that the wings 3 are spaced apart to form a slot or passage permitting the entrance of the yarn into the eyelet, and that the notches 4c are obliquely arranged relatively to said passage and open into the latter. It will also be seen that the positioning means including the recess 5 and the projection 5, are arranged to hold the yarnreceiving slot 13 of the eyelet in alinement with the thread {passage formed by the wings3.
