Specication of Letters Patent.

Application filed April 7, 1917. l Serial No. 160,501.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GILBERT BRANAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at .ravityg in the county of Taylor and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful improvements in VVire-Stretchers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a fence stretcher and the principal object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will permit the fence to be secured to the post on which the stretcher is placed.
Another object of the invention is to permit the use of the well known double block type of stretcher provided with a safety lock.
Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby the wire may be adjusted on the stretcher so as to be nailed to the post at the most desirable point.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide means combined with the double blocks whereby the wire is stretched beyond said blocks andmay be nailed to the post to which the said blocks are connected.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device `of this character which is simple and durable in construction, reliable and efficient in operation and one which can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a minimum cost.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appendedclaims. j j
In describing my invention in detail, ref erence will be had to the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views. and in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a front view.
Fig. `3 is a sectional detail. j
4In these figures, 1 indicates the post, 2 the wire and 3 the chain for connecting the stretcher 4 with the post. This stretcher consists of a bar 5 carrying at one end the blocks 6 and hook 7 and at its other end carrying the gripping jaws 8, said jaws loeing* loosely connect-ed to a' loop 9 forming part of a plate 10 secured to the bar by the bolts 11. This loop is arranged transversely of the bar 5 and extends beyond the longitudinal upper and lower edges of said bar, so that the jaws 8 may be moved above or below the bar to facilitate the fastening of the wire 2 as desired. The loop is bent toward the end of the bar 5 opposite that end to which the blocks 6 are secured, and is spaced from the bar. As will be seen from the drawings, the rod 9 is curved away from the bar 5 so that the jaws 8 can pass freely from one side of the bar 5 to the other. The blocks 12 are secured to a slide 13 through which the bar 5 passes, so that said bar has movement therein. The blocks 12 carry an eye bolt 14C adapted to receive the ends of the chain 3. 15 indicates a cable for operating` the blocks.
When the device is to be used the Wire to be stretched is secured with its end in the lgripping jaws 8 and is placed in the hook 7. The stretcher' is then secured to the post by means of the chain 3. Then by pulling on the cable the blocks 6 will be caused to move toward the blocks 12 and in this movement the blocks 6 carry the bar 5 with them. Thus. the wire is stretched beyond the post and by reason of the curved rod 9 said wire may be secured to the post either below or above the bar 5. The hook 7 engaging with the wire helps to support the stretcher in proper position.
It is thought from the foregoing that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
l desire it to be understood that ll may make slight changes inthe construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
l claim as my invention:
1. A wire stretcher comprising' a bar slidably mounted upon a fence post, a member secured to one end of the bar, and extending transversely thereof, said member projecting above and below said bar, gripping means movably attached to said member, and means connected with the other end of the bar for moving the same horizontally with relation to the post.
2.y A. wire stretcher comprising a bar sliol ably mounted upon a fence post, a loop seother end of the bar for moving the same cured to one end of the bar and extending horizontally with relation to the post. i0 transversely thereof to extend above and be- In testimony whereof I affix my signature low said bar, said loop being bent toward in presence of tWo Witnesses.
the free end of the bar to which it isat-` v GILBERT BRANAN. tached and being in spaced relation to said Witnesses:
bar, gripping means movably attached'to' E. S. BROWN,
said loop, and means connected With the WILBUB BRANAN.
