Improvement in Plows.

UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.

IMPROVEMENT m PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 130,196, dated August 6, 1872.
Specification describing a Compound Turn- Plow and Subsoiler, invented by EDWARD S. 000K, of Laurel Grove, in the county of Pittsylvania and State of Virginia.
The invention consists in a new mode of constructing a skeleton frame, and of attachin g the share thereto.
Figure l is a perspective view of the plow With the mold-board detached. Figs. 2, 6, and 7 are detail views of the mold-board. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the plow. Fig. 4 is a detail view of land-side with part of the foot of the frame. Fig. 5 is a bottom view of share and frame-foot.
A A represent the handles; B, the beam; 0, the skeleton frame, to which the plow-irons are attached; D, the land-side; E, the moldboard F, the share; and G, the clevis. The skeleton frame 0 consists of the foot 0, standard c and the rearwardly curved and projecting flange 0 On the rear side of foot 0 is formed an angular recess, 0 which receives the angular ofl'set d of land-side, which is also attached to foot by the ordinary bolt and nut (1 (1 By this lock-joint c d all upward or downward vertical play of the landside is effectually prevented. The front of standard 0 is smooth and spirally concaved at C so as to transfer the trash that gathers in front underneath and to one side, and cause it to be turned under. On the forward edge of frame are serrations a and projections a, which fit into corresponding projections and serrations f f of share. These prevent lateral movement of the share, while the share-lip f which projects into a cavity, a (which is under the right corner of frame 0,) serves to take the strain off the fastening share-bolt and prevent vertical play. The mold-board E is constructed with lateral projection e, which has a dovetailed screw-head, e, that fits into a corresponding dovetailed groove, b, on the inner side of flange 0 the two being fastened by a clamp-screw, b On the lower part of frame 0 is a lateral stop, N, which receives the strain caused by pressure of sod against mold-board. Another fastening-bolt, D is shown to attach mold-board to frame; but it is not material, since the dovetailed joint b e and the stop b amply suffice for this purpose under all ordinary circumstances. The handles are both attached to land-side, but are then connected with frame .0 by a brace, H, which passes obliquely across from one to the other. This retains th e handles firmly and rigidly in position, while their use in throwing the heavy plow about cannot displace them out of their proper relation to the plow irons and beam. It also helps to support the force which is constantly being exerted against mold-board flange, and prevent it from being \vrenched out of its exact position. The clevis G consists of two plates, 9 g, having perforations in a diagonal line, which brings the lowest perforation under the beam, where is placed a pin and hook to receive the double-tree. This is a very cheap and efficient clevis, and can be readily applied to or removed from any beam.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The land-side D, provided with the angular offset or block (1, in combination with the foot (3, recess 0 said parts being secured together by the bolt and nut d d all constructed and fitted together as shown and described; 2. The skeleton frame 0, consisting of the foot 0, standard 0 and rearwardly curved flange adapted, with the share, to serve as a subsoiler, and, with the addition of the moldboard, as a turn-plow, as described.
