To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LYPHILIP S. GRAVER, citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Punching-Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, conoise, and exact description, reference. being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to punching mech-. anism and work holding means for adj ustably positioning work withreference to the punch structure. The machine of my inven tion is of particular utility in punching rivet holes in peripheral portions of plates that are to constitute the ends of tanks, etc, my improved machine being-of service in operating upon such plates that are'of widely dlfi'erent diameters. In the machine of my invention there is desirably included a set or gang of punches and corresponding dies that are upon the) arc of a circle having a diameter which is intermediate the diameters of plates of larger and smaller diameters, my machine enabling the use of the same punching mechanism upon plates of approximate sizes without substitution of new punching mechanism.
I will explain my invention more fully by reference to the accompanying drawings showing the preferred embodiment thereof and in which Figure 1 is alongitudi-nal sectional view of the mechanism of my invention; Fig. 1 is a view on line 1 1 of Fig. 1;

The mechanism includes a punch press 1, of any suitable construction, the punch press illustrated including a normally stationary die member 2 supported within the throat of the punch press and a separable punch carrying member 3 driven by the power device 4: whose association with the member 3 is governed by any suitable clutch mechanism (generally indicated at 5) that may be controlled by a. treadle 6. As the invention is preferably practised the punch carrier 3 carries a plurality or gang of punches 7, the

die member 2 having as many punch receivmg openings 8 as there are punches. The punches 7 and the receiving openings 8 are desirably arranged upon an arc of a circle which is of mean diameter respecting circular plates of somewhat smaller and larger diameters, a die and punch structure of other curvature being substituted when the circulariplates to be operated upon thereby are of much smaller or larger diameters.
Referring more particularly to Fig. 1, the circular plate or other work 9 to be operated upon is mounted upon a spider 10 and is secured .in relation thereto by any suitable means such as the bolts 11. This spider is anchored to a table 12 by means of bolts 13, the legs of the spider having their outer ends on a higher horizontal level than the portions thereof which are anchored to the table whereby the fastening bolts 13 may be accommodated While at the same time the work 9 may be positioned to lay snugly upon the top of the die member 2. The table is secured, by means of bolts ll, to the flange 15 at the upper end of a bearing sleeve 16. This bearing sleeve may be turned about the normally stationary vertical shaft 17, (constituting an element that defines the axis of rotation of the turn table 12), the bearing sleeve being prevented from rising by means of the enlargement 18 at the upper end of the vertical shaft and from being lowered by resting upon a stationary bearing The vertical shaft 17 projects downwardly below the bearing plate 19, this lower portion of the shaft being penetrated by a horizontal shaft 20 that is in threaded engagement with the shaft 17. The outer end of the shaft 20 has applied thereto a hand wheel or lever 21 by which the shaft 20 may be turned. The ends of the shaft 20 are journaled in bearings 22, 23 which are normally stationary, being carried by the transverse members 24:, 25 of a framework that includes the longitudinal members 26, 27. This framework is carried upon pedestals 28. By turning the shaft 20 with the aid of the hand wheel 21 the vertical shaft 17 may be moved bodily to and from the punch press to adjust the work with reference to said press and in order that the shaft 20 may be relieved of the weight of the shaft 17 the sleeve 16 is caused to bear the weight of the shaft 17 by the shaft head 18 fixed upon the upper end of the shaft 17; while the weight of the sleeve 16 is borne by the bearing plate 19 that rests upon the longitudinal frame I which the bearing plate 19 may s'lide when the shaft 17 is being shifted to adjust Work of new size to the punch press.
When the Work operated upon by the ma chine is in the form of a disk or circular plate that is to have perforations punched therethrough adjacent itsperiphery the table 12 should be in the form of a turn table, on which account the table supporting'sleeve' 16 is journaled to rotate about the vertical shaft 17. The table may readily be turned in one direction only until the work has been sufficiently turned to adjust it With reference to the punch mechanism, the table having turning effort exerted thereupon in a reverse direction. after the adjustment has been secured to hold the dog in tight engagement with a ratchet tooth adjacent the same, the accuracy of the position of the work with reference to the punch mechanism thereby being assured.
