Description

s. MATTHEWS.
STENCIL-CUTTING MACHINE. I No.17 3,732. Patented Feb.22,1876.
WI 212 66686': I 72 716722177".-
UNITED STATES SYLVESTER MATTHEWS, OF MORGAN TOWNSHIP, GREENE COUNTY, PA.
PATENT OFFICE,
IMPROVEMENT IN STENCIL-CUTTING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 173,732, dated February 22, 18725 application filed I December S, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SYLVESTER MATTHEWS, of Morgan township, Greene county, Pennsylvania, have invented a Stencil-Cutting Machine, of which the following is a specification: My invention consists of a rotatable metallic plate, P, with one or more apertures through it of any desired pattern, the walls of which present cutting angles, and one or more punches or dies, D, correspondingiu shape to the apertures connected to and moving with said plate, and a spring, S, for holding the die or punch over the opening in the plate, as shown in Figure 1 of the accompanying drawing.
The machine is more fully illustrated in Fig. 2, of which F F F is a frame, of whichR is a table, on which the plate P rests, and the upright O passing through the larger end of the plate, the other end lying on the table, allowing it to revolve partly or entirely around the upright, .the effect of which is to let the cutting fall through the plate, the spring S and the compound lever L forcing the die through the plate and the material of which the stencil is to be made.
The machine is operated as follows: The operator takes the thin plate of metal, or other material of which the stencil is to be made, in the left hand, inserts it between the die and the plate, grasps the lever with the right hand, pulling itover toward him and down, forcing the die through the material and plate. Replace the lever, the spring brings the dieback to its place. Remove the material, slide the plate sidewise ofi' thetable by revolving partly around the upright to allow the cutting to fall through the plate. Replace and proceed as before.
It is evident that the plate can be extended to a complete circle, with any number of openings, springs, and dies to correspond, without interfering with the principles of the invention.
I claim as my invention The combination of a-rotatable metallic plate, with one or more apertures through it of any desired pattern, the walls of which present cutting angles, and one or more punches, corresponding in shape to the apertures connected to and moving with said plate, and a device for forcing the punch or punches severally or in succession, it there be more than one, downward and through a plate or plates of metal lying upon said aperture, substantially as described.
