Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 29, 1919.
Application led September 26, 1917. Serial No. 193,392.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLARD C. BRrN'roN, a citizennof the United IStates of America, and a resident of New York, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mountings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
My invention relates to a mounting or backing for maps, plans, charts or the like, and has for one object to provide a backing that shall be particularly adapted to receive short pins or tacks for the purpose of graphically representing predetermined facts.
In representing facts graphically by means of maps, charts or the like, I have employed tacks or pins which may have heads of varying colors, styles or sizes, to represent both the position and the density of lines of troops or the distribution of population, or the extent of sales in different parts of the country or the like.
It is particularly desirable to provide a backing into which pins or tacks may be readily thrust and which at the same time will have sufficient friction to grip the tacks near the head and avoid their accidental removal.
According to my present invention I provide a simple, durable and inexpensive backing which is light in weight, is relatively stiif, and possesses the aforesaid advantages.
In order that my invention may be thoroughly understood I will now proceed to describe the same in the following` specification and then point out the novel features thereof in appended claims.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure l is a plan view showing my improved backing in use.
Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation through a portion of the backing drawn to a relatively large scale and illustrating its construction.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4--4 of Fig. 2.
The backing illustrated comprises a body 10 composed of a light substance into which pins or tacks may be easily inserted. I prefer to utilize a plurality of layers 11, 12 and 13 of corrugated board, the intermediate 'layer l2 being arranged with its cells eX- tending oppositely from the cells of the layers 1l and 13 to make it stiff.
Mounted on the base 10 is a layer 14 of cork, linoleum or the like which is adapted to permit the tacks or pins to be forced through it readily but which at the same time offers suiiicient friction to grip the tacks or pins and prevent them from either falling out or being removed too easily.
The cork layer is preferably glued or pasted to the top of the base and it is preferably finished with an outer surface of muslin, linen or other suitable fabric designated l5, to protect it against crumbling or destruction.
The cloth or paper 16 on which the chart or map is printed is laid on the linen or muslin surface 16 and the tacks or pins which are designated 17 are stuck through the map into the back as clearly shown in the drawings.
Felt may be substituted for the cork layer if desired, and the cloth surface for the cork or felt omitted, although I prefer the structure illustrated.
The cloth layer 15 serves to reinforce the structure and a second layer designated 18 is preferably mounted on the back as shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4.-. The cloth may be either single-ply or multi-ply, and the cork, felt, linoleum or the like may be omitted entirely if desired.
The advantages of the use of maps or charts with tacks or pins having heads of different sizes and color to represent facts graphically have already become well known and need not be discussed in detail.
The structure of the backing and particularly the materials employed may be varied within the spirit and scope of my invention, and I intend that only such limitations be imposed as are indicated in the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A backing for maps or the like comprising a cellular base having a topy layer composed of cork, with a surface of fabric.
2. A backing for maps or the like comprising a cellular base having a top layer composed of cork, with a surface layer of cloth stuck thereon.
3. A backing comprising corrugated board built up in layers with their cells extending alternately in opposite directions and-a sur- 6p A backingcomprising `a relatively stil?, face member adapted to gripthe shank of a light, inexpensive base easily perforated by pm or tack. a pin or tack, a sub-surface layer adapted to 4. A backing comprising corrugated board offer material friction to the removal of pins 15 5 built up in layers With their cells 'extending orta'c'ks', anda reinforcing surface layer of alternately in opposite directions and a surcloth superposed on the sub-surface fricface member of cork.y tion layer.
5. A backing. for maps or the like com- In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set prising corrugated board having a plane eX- my'v hand'tliis 1.2 day of Sept., 1917'.
10 posed surface on one side and a'corl surface l layer on the opposite side. WILLARD C. BRINTON.
