Description

A. WOODRUFF.
Improvement in Carriage-Wheel Boxes.
No. 130,172. Patented Aug. 6,1872.
%lll1lllllllllllllli% Arlllllllll'lllllllllllllflh PATENT OFFICE. I
ABIJAH WOODRUFF, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT lN CARRIAGE-WHEEL BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 130,172, dated August 6, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABIJAH WQODRUFF, of the city and county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin (Jarriage-VVheel Boxes; and to enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, I will proceed to describe, referring to the drawing, in whichthe same letters indicate like parts in each of the figures. I
The nature of this invention consists in making the chamber of the box or pipe larger than the diameter of the axle, and in forming depressions in the inner surface of said box or pipe, and inserting the axle through centeringwashers arranged securely at each end of said box orpipe, so that said axle shall be securel arranged centrally within the box or pipe, and thenpouring melted metal into the space around the axle inside of the box or pipe, thus producing aperfect and-eentral fit of the box to the axle; and, when desirable, by simply forming a groove in the bearing-surface of the axle, it can be perfectly secured within the pipe without any pther fastening. The object of this invention is to produce a better, cheaper, and noiseless box for atearriage-wheel.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a View of a box or pipe laid open in section, showing its chamber and the depressions formed therein to firmly secure and hold the metal poured therein in a melted state around the axle. ,Fig. 3 shows the outer end of an axle and its collars, around which the melted metal is poured. Fig. 4 shows the axle a within the metal or composition box b, formed by pouring melted metal into the box and around the axle inside of the box or pipe 0 through the orifice d, and being secured therein by bosses c, which enter the depressions f.before or after said boxes or pipes c are fitted into the wood or metal hubs g. h is awasher, which should be of the proper size to fill the axlecollar rabbet 1', while its orifice should be a close fit to the axle a just inside of its collar j. 7- is awasher, which should be made to closely fit the outer end of the axle and the end of the box or pipe. Thus the axle is held in a central position in the box, while the melted metal or composition is poured therein, thus securing the composition box I) in a true and.
central position in the box or pipe- Thus I am enabled to secure a perfect and true fit of the box on the axle, a cheaper article of manufacture, and a box easily and quick- 1y repaired when necessary without the aid of skilled workmen.
I believe I have thus shown the nature, advantage, and construction of this invention so as to enable others skilled in the arts to make and use the same therefrom.
What I claim, and desire tors Patent, is I The pipe or box 0 having depressions f, washers h and k, and the axle a, in combination with the metal or composite box I), formed in the manner described, for the purpose specified.
