To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, HORACE F. KRIEGER, a citizen of U. S. of America, residing at Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Convertible Chairs, Swings, Stools, and Cradles, of which the following is a specification.

The object of the invention is to provide a convertible article of furniture which may be used interchangeably as a childs high chair, a swing, a high stool, or a cradle and which possesses all of the essential advantages of each of the several devices, and may be readily adjusted to perform either of its several functions without the employment of tools.

Further objects and advantages will be presented in the course of the following description, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion and details may be resorted to, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

The device embodying the invention comprises essentially a seat unit 10 and a support unit 11, the former having a seat 12, a back 13 and side arms 14 together with a tray 15 of which the arms 16 are pivotally connected as at 17 to the lateral edges of the back while a restraining bar 18 is slidably tted at its ends upon the front standards 19 of the side arms, said bar having an opening to receive reduced portions of said standards so as to be free to slide upward and downward thereon and serve as a means of preventing the occupant of the chair from falling forward, whether the tray is in place or not, and also serve as a means for preventing the child from assuming a standing position upon the seat.

The support unit embodies frame bars or legs 20 attached to a top 21, having a central opening 22 for registration with a corresponding opening 23 in the seat element of the seat unit 10, the latter opening being fitted with a removable cover 24, so that the device is adapted to be used as .a nursery chair when an interchangeable shelf and floor element 25 which is pivotally mounted upon the rear frame bars or legs 20 is in the horizontal position indicated in Fig. 1, the portion of the frame between the plane of said interchangeable shelf and iioor member and that of the top 21 being laterally housed in or inclosed as shown by the web 26 of wood or any other suitable material to constitute a cupboard or compartment.

The top 21 is provided with lateral clips 27 constituting guides for engagement with the seat member 12 when the seat and support units are combined as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 to adapt the device to be used as an infants high chair and extending upward from said seat member are the hanger rods 28 to eyes 29 in the upper ends of which may be attached the ropes or chains 30 by which the seat unit may be suspended for use as a swing.

The interchangeable shelf and iioor element 25 is supported in its horizontal or shelf serving position by means of a bolt or catch 31 for engagement with a foot rest or step 32 projecting outwardly from the forward frame bars or legs 20 of the supporting unit, and pivotally mounted upon the rear frame bars or legs at the point 33 is an interchangeable bottom brace and floor eX- tension or head rest 34 adapted to be locked in its horizontal position as shown in Fig. 1 by means of catches 35, segmental guide rods 36 being also connected with said member 34 adjacent to its front edge and disposed in guides 37, so that as the said member 34 is swung upon its pivot to a position substantially in the plane with the rear frame bar or legs, the guide rods will operate through the guide eye until checked by a stop 38 which will serve to maintain said member 34 in the position indicated in Fig. 3.

Also hingedly mounted upon the rear frame bars or legs of the support unit are the rocker elements 39, adapted to be folded into planes parallel with and close to said frame bars as indicated in Fig. l, or to be extended to position substantially perpendicular to the frame bars to form rockers as indicated in Figs. 3 and 4, these rocker elements being maintained in their extended or operative positions by means of spring locking arms 40 having offsets 41 for engagement with openings in the rocker elements. When said offsets are disengaged from the rocker elements the locking arms 40 are adapted to fold parallel with the rockers substantially in the plane of the frame bars or legs 20, and when the interchangeable bottom brace and i'ioor extension 34: is secured in its horizontal position as indicated in Fig. l, it serves as a means of strengthening or stabilizing the structure near the point o support. Any desired number of transverse filler elements lll may be used to connect the frame bars or legs to serve as rounds to inclose the space between the sides of the frame so that when the rockers as extended and the interchangeable shelf and iioor element 25 is in position to form a portion of the i'loor of the cradle, as indicated in Fig. 3, the infant occupant of the cradle will be prevented from falling laterally out of said space. Moreover it will be obvious that the child grows and requires move room lengthwise, the member 34 may be disengaged and moved from the position indicated in Fig. l to that indicated in F ig. 3 where it constitutes an extension oit the floor of the cradle or as a head rest of the occupant.

It will be seen that one of the rocker elements is of greater length than the other so as to hold the cradle in the position shown in Fig. 3, in order to render the appearance of the cradle more attractive. A level bed for the invention is provided by using pillows or the like at the lower part oi the crib.

Also obviously the support unit may be used independently of the seat unit and in its upright position as a high stool, in which event the loose cover 24 may be fitted in and form a closure vtor the opening 22.

Having described the invention I claim l. A convertible chair having a seat unit and a support iuiit provided respectively with a seat member and a top having registering openings, a closure for the opening in the seat, a hinged shelf carried by the support unit below the plane of its said top, and means for securing the seat member and top in operative relation.

2. A convertible chair havin detachably connected seat and support units provided respectively with a seat member and a top having registering openings and a closure for the opening in said seat member, thc support unit being provided below the plane of its top with an inclosed compartment of which the bottom is formed by a hinged shelf, rockers hingedly mounted upon the support unit for forming the same into a cradle and means for holding the shelf in position closing the compartment or in position forming the bottom of the cradle.

3. A convertible chair having detachably connected seat and support units, the latter being provided with an interchangeable shelf and ioor element, yand means for securing it in shelf serving position, and foldable rocker elements.

5. A convertible chair having detachably connected seat and support units, the latter being provided with fo-ldable rocker lelements and an extension head rest oldable within the contour of t-he support unit and having limiting guides for determining the extent oi its outward movement.

6. A convertible chair having detachably connected seat and support-l units, the latter being provided with foldable rocker elements, and an extension head rest foldable within the contour of the support unit and having segmental limiting guide rods operating in guide eyes to determine the extent of its outward movement.

7. A converti-ble chair having detachably connected seat and support units, the latter being provided with foldable transverse elements disposed normally within the contour oi' the frame of said units and detachably secured in said position, and adapted for arrangement substantially in a common plane to respectively form floor and head rest elements, means :for maintaining said parts in their adjusted positions, and rocker elements oldably mounted upon the frame of the support units adjacent to the plane of mounting of said transverse elements.

8. A convertible chair having detachably connected seat and support units, the latter having a frame constituting supporting legs and a ixed top, a portion of the space within the frame bars near the plane ofthe top being housed, an interchangeable shelf and ioor element normally disposed transversely between said :trame bars at the bottom of the housed portion of the frame and provided with means for securing the frame in said position, an interchangeable bottom brace and extension head rest normally disposed transversely between the frame bars near the bottom of the support units and provided withV segmental guide members operating in guides on the frame bars and adapted to permit extension of said elements to a position approximately parallel with the rear frame bars of the support units,

means for securing said interchangeable brace and head rest extension in its normal or transverse positions, rockers oldably mounted upon the rear frame bars, and means 'or securing therocker elements in their extended positions, substantially perpendicular with the plane of said frame bars of the support units.
