Description

J. WILLSON.
Hem-Stitch Guide for Sewing-Machine s.
NO. 130,169, Patented Aug. 6,1872.
Witnesses.
PATENT QFFIOE.
JOHN VVILLSON, OF GREEN POINT, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT l N HEM-STITCH GUIDES FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 130,169, dated August 6, 1872.
SPECIFICATION. v
I, JOHN WrLLsoN, of Green Point, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new Device for Producing with Sewing-Machines the Hem-Stitch, of which the following is a specification:
Nature and Objects of the Dwention.
The object of my invention is to produce with sewing-machines what is termed the hem-stitch and my invention consists in a movable slotted plate, as will be more fully described hereafter.
Description of theAccompang ing Drawing. Figure 1 is a plan of the slotted plate. Fig.
2 shows it placed in position upon the sewingmachiue.
General Description.
The device A, Figs. 1 and 2, consists of a flat plate of metal or other suitablesubstance having cut entirely through it the slots a b c. The slot c'is for the passage of the needle; a
is for the guide (1, and b is to admit of the Ina-v I plate and the other over it, and the toe being let down presses the whole upon the feedwheel, so that when the machine is started both the material and the plate are moved along together, and the sewing is continued until the end of the slot 0 reaches the needle. The machine is then stopped, the toe lifted, and the plate drawn back, when the same operation may be repeated until the end of the material is reached. With my invention the guide effectually prevents any tendency to a crooked seam, but should an irregular seam be required I construct the slots to form any desired pattern.
I am aware of the existence of Letters Patent to A. L. Rumplf April 27, 1869, for a fiked guide, provided with a hole, through which the needle continually operates, the stitches meanwhile passing out through a slot reaching to the edge of the plate.
Claim.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, will be understood by the following:
The movable slotted plate A and guide (1, constructed and operating as shown and described.
