To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN G. Pnrroma citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Advertising Device for Finger-Bowls,

. of which the following is a specification.

My present invention relates to an advertising device which may be employed as a temporary lining for finger bowls, said device being capable of having any desired decorative design printed or otherwise placed thereon and having the lower portion thereof, which is covered by the water, provided with advertising characters or design, such as for example, the coat of arms and name of the hotel or caf at which the device is being used. g

It is well known that waiters or attendants in hotel dining rooms, cafs and restaurants are frequently careless about washing out or cleaning finger bowls, and it sometimes happens that the same finger bowl is indiscriminately or accidentally used, without being first washed, by difl'erent'persons, whereby skin or other diseases or germs may be communicated, and travelers, patrons and others are liable to experience annoyance and discomfort from this cause.

My present invention therefore further relates to a novel construction of detachable or removable finger bowl lining, which is adapted for use in hotels, restaurants, dining rooms or cafs, wherein I employ a novel construction of lining, having diverging, corrugated, fiuted or crimped side walls, thereby forming a structure whose upper portions or edge can be enlarged or widened or contracted for finger bowls of varying sizes and which can be readily placed within the finger bowl, and which is so proportioned with respect to the finger bowl that the base of said lining contacts with the base of the finger bowl, while the. upper, corrugated, crimped or fluted edge thereof terminates substantially flush with the upper edge of the finger bowl, the base of the lining being adapted to have advertising matter or other insignia printed or otherwise displayed thereon.

By the use of my novel invention of a finger bowl lining which is adapted to fit any ordinary sized finger bowl, patrons of the dining rooms of hotels, cafs or restaurants avoid all liability whatever of contracting skin or other contagious diseases or malignant germs, slnce each individual has practically his own finger bowl, and can feel assured that it has been used by no one else, and by reason of the corrugated, upwardly diverging walls of the lining, the same can be contracted or expanded so as to be readily adapted to finger bowls or the like of varying sizes.

To the above ends, my invention consists of a novel construction of an advertising device employed in conjunction with a finger bowl and the novel features of which will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims,

Referring to the drawing 1 designates a finger bowl of the usual construction, which has the side Walls 2 and the base 3'. i designates my novel construction of finger bowl lining, which is provided with the upwardly diverging walls 5, which are corrugated, fluted or crimped, said corrugationsor flutes also diverging upwardly so as to give a pleasing appearance to the article and terminating in the flat or base portion 6, which latter is adapted to rest upon the inner bottom portion 7 of the finger bowl 1, as will be apparent from Fig. 2. The inner or upper surface of the base 6 of th lining member may have suitable advertising matter or other insignia thereon, as indicated in Fig. 3, and it will be found inserted in the finger bowl, as indicated in Fig. 2, it being apparent by reason of the crimped, fluted or corrugated upwardly diverglng side walls 5, wherein the co-rruga tions, orimps or flutes extend upwardly, the entire distance from the base 6 to the upper edge of the lining, and in addition, said corrugations diverge slightly in an upward direction, being widest at the top edge 10, and narrowest at their bottom near their junction 11 with the base 6, that th top of the lining can be widened or contracted, according to requirements, so as to nicely fit finger bowls of varying sizes, and, in addition, the corrugations or fiutings give a slight degree of strength to the upwardly diverging side walls, so that they will not tend to collapse and will retain the water 9 within them for the requisite length of time during the period of use. It will be noted that the advertising device is supported Within the finger bowl by the engagement of the outer periphery of the base with the inner wall of such bowl, and that the upper edge of the advertising device terminates within or below the horizontal plane of the top edge of the finger bowl.

My novel construction of finger bowl lining can be cheaply manufactured and the base 6 of the same can be utilized for printing thereon the coat of arms or name of the hotel, cafe or restaurant or other insignia, as will be apparent, so that the device can be readily utilized as an advertising medium,

in addition to its use as a finger bowl or a finger bowl lining.

lit will be a parent that the above described detachable lining, by reason of its novel construction of corrugated, fluted or crimped side walls, will be adapted to fit any ordinary sized finger bowl, since said side walls are expansible or contractible according to requirements, and by its use, patrons of the dining rooms of hotels, restaurants or cait's are. enabled to avoid all liability of contracting skin or other contagious diseases or malignant germs, since a person provided with a finger bowl provided with a lining of my novel construction will be enabled to have practically his own finger bowl and to be assured that the same has been used by no one else.

I have shown a border 12 comprising a plurality of spaced annlular lines located a slight distance from the upper edge of the device, it being understood that any design may be employed and that, if desired, any decorative design of china or table ware may be imitated, so that the advertising device will correspond, if desired, to the decorations on the china, which is being used in conjunction therewith.

Owing to the fact that the advertising material is placed on the bottom of the device so as to be covered by the liquid therein, the liquid, such as for example, water, serves to accentuate the advertising material, so that the same is rendered clearer cut and stands out more prominently than would be the case if this was not covered by the water. By this means, the name of the hotel or cafe, or other advertising matter employed, is very prominently brought to the attention of the user of the finger bowl, 1 am aware that it has heretofore been proposed to employ a metallic fluted receptacle for confectionery, as in Patent #927,396, and that in Patent #963,454, it has been proposed to employ a fluted paper cup having a flange fitting over the upper edge of the exterior holder, which latter is provided with a hinged cover, which closes down upon said flange which latter serves to deaden the noise of the cover when it is closed.

I am also aware that it has heretofore been proposed to employ a paper dish hav- -ing inclined walls, as shown in the patent to Ingersoll, No. 221,564, and that it has also been proposed to employ a removable lining for a wash bowl, as seen in Patent No.

l30,l$?+5, and that it has also been proposed to employ a removable lining for a drinking cup, as seen in Patent No. 1,035,? 18, but as far as I am aware, ll am the first in the art to employ an advertising device having a plain or flat base portion and corrugated, fluted or crimped upwardly diverging side walls, wherein the corrugations diverge up-= wardly and extend the full length of the side walls, from the base member 6 to the upper edge 10, so that the upper periphery of the device may be expanded or contracted, according to requirements, so as to nicely and snugly fit any finger bowl of the ordinary construction or size. 1 am aware that it has heretofore been proposed in Patent 681,333, to provide a sputum receiver with a corrugated lining which is made out ct papier-mach having corrugations to fit the corrugated wall of a container. My present invention is not adapted for such use and is clearly differentiated from such a structure, since the lining is pliable or flexible so that its side wall may be readily expanded or cont acted. '1- am also aware that in Patent a a an tiated from the constructions disclosed in Patent 681,333 and Patent 1,101,589 and to such constructions I make no claim.

It will now be apparent that I have devised anovel and useful decorative and sanitary advertising device, which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description, and While 'I have, in the present instance, shown and described a preferred embodiment thereof which Will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of modification in various particulars Without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a device of the character stated, the combination with the finger bowl having its top open and unobstructed and having its inner side wall Wider at its top than at its bottom, of a remova'ble sanitary. lining for said finger bowl, consisting of a paper body having a substantially fiat base and an upwardly diverging annular wall provided with flutes or corrugations which gradually increase in width from their bottoms to their tops to render such side wall capable of expansion and contraction to closely engage the inner side wall of finger bowls of different, internal diameters near their inner upper edge when liquid is poured into the lining, said liquid serving as a means to retain said lining in assembled position with respect to the finger bowl.

2. In an advertising device of the character stated, the combination with a finger bowl, the top of which is open and unobstructed and the inner side wall of which is wider at its top than at its bottom, of a removable advertising device forming a sanitary lining for said finger bowl and consisting of a paper body havin a substantially flat base and an upward y diverging annular wall provided with flutes or corrugations which gradually increase in width from their bottom to their top to render such side wall capable of expansion and contraction to closely fit the inner side wall of finger bowls of different internal diameters near their inner upper edge when liquid is poured into the lining, the edge formed by said bottom and side wall being adapted to engage the inner wall of said finger bowl, and the inner face of said lining on the portion adapted to be covered by liquid being provided with advertising insignia which is accentuated by the water and rendered more easily visible to the user of the advertising device.
