IMPROVEMENT IN ROOFING-TILES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 130,l56, dated August 6, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
I To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we 7 ALEXIS Roux and PIERRE Bowl, of Marseilles, France, have invented a new and useful Tile for Roofing; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The object of our invention is to provide an improved earthenware tile, principally for roofing purposes; and it consists, mainly, in a novel construction and shape by which the tiles are easily laid, and when in position are so matched that by a system of elevated ridges and corresponding depressions the roof-is rendered perfectly water-tight during the strongest wind. The lower surfaces of these tiles are also provided with a perforated lug, by, which each tile can be secured to the supporting-frame, so that it will be impossible to displace them by any ordinary force.
Referring to the accompanying drawing for a more complete explanation of my invention, Figure 1 shows a top view of a series of tiles. Fig. 2 shows a section of atile. Fig. 3 shows a section of a roof formed with these tiles.
A is a surface in the middle portionof the tile, which is flat, and serves to convey the greater portion of the water which may fall upon the tile. Through the center of this surface an elevated ridge, B, passes, which, commencing about one-third of the length of the tile from the upper end, extends to the lower end, where it is made wider, as shown, so that the water that flows down the surface A will pass into the corresponding surface of the next tile below. An elevation, 0, extends entirely around the surface A, being made considerably wider upon one side than the other, so as to admit of two longitudinal depressions or grooves in the lower surface. These grooves fit upon corresponding ridges E E upon the upper surface of the opposite side of the next tile, so that the joint between two tiles placed side by side will be between the elevations O, and just above the inner groove'formed by the ridge E. This joint also stands in a line with the elevation B of the tile next above on the slope of the roof, so that very little water will find its way into the small groove beneath the joint. A double ridge, F, extends across the upper end, forming two transverse channels, which will receive any water which maybe driven under the tiles by the wind, and these channels convey it to the longitudinal channels formed by the ridge E. A smallchannel is formed upon the upper surface of the broad portion of the elevation O, and short transverse cuts a a convey the surplus water to the surface A. The lower end of each tile is curved, as shown, and with a ridge, G, projecting downward around this lower end. Transverse depressions are made across the elevated ridges (J and in the ridge G, so that the tiles lie closely upon each other. Near the upper end, and upon the lower surface of each tile is a lug, H, which rests against one of the transverse timbers of the roof upon which the tiles are laid, and thus keeps them in place. A lug, I, has a holemade through it, and by this means each tile can be wired fast to the roof-timbers from the inside.
By this construction we are enabled to pro- .duce aroof which is light, durable, and cheap and absolutely weather and fire proof.
Various slight modifications may be madr in the construction of these tiles without chang ing the principle of construction.
