Description

N0. 130,151. Patented Aug. 6,1872.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JULIUS R. POND, OF NEW HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT;
IMPROVEMENT IN CASTING CHILLED ROLLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 130,151, dated August 6, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUS R. POND, of New Hartford, county of Litchfield, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Casting Chilled Rolls; and to enable others skilled in the art to make and practice the same I will proceed to describe it, referring to the drawing, in which the same letters indicate like parts in each of the figures.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a section of a mold for casting chilled rolls, showing a sleeve or additional section of a mold, which is fitted into the ends of the mold is made intwo or-more parts in the common way.
a is the body of the mold. b is a section of an end or mold, formed of cast-iron, for forming the soft ends of the rolls, to allow of their being turned up for bearings. The inside of this end portion of the mold b is formed funnel shape, and is coated with a preparation of asbestus, with gum arabic, or other adhesive and combustible material, preparatory to casting or pouring the metal into the mold, so that after the mold has been properly arranged and prepared the melted metal is poured therein in the common way. The body of the roll will be chilled, and the ends, in consequence of the plastic material or coating,
will be allowed to shrink while the body is cooling, thus obviating the common danger of said soft ends cracking or being separated from the body of the rolls. The mold b is carefully fitted into the inside surface of the mold a, having a shoulder, 0, which prevents its entering but a given distance into the mold a, thus in a very simple and effective manner securing the chilled roll and the soft ends for bearings. I
I believe I have thus shown the nature, construction, and advantage of this invention so
