Be it known that I, CHARLES F. SCHUH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hot-Water Bottles, of which the following is a specification.

The invention pertains to what are commonly called hot-water bottles, these being rubber bags having at their lower end an apertured tab by which the bottle may be hung up in reverse position, so as to drain, and at the upper end a mouth, with a suitable stopper, the mouth being provided at one edge thereof with an integral tab by which the bottle may be held in the hand, between the thumb and fore-finger or ngers, while the bottle is being filled with hot water. After the bottle has been filled it may be closed at its upper end by any suitable stopper, several forms of which are shown in existing patents and others are well known through mercantile conditions, though not possibly described in Letters- Patent. My present invention has relation to the integral tab at one side of the mouth of the bottle, and the invention resides in the provision on said tab of suitable integral projecting means whereby the tab maybe securely held and not be'liable to slip from the (hand under the increased weight of the bottle due to hot water being poured into the same. The mouth-tab, as I may designate the same, is shown in its preferred form in the drawings forming a part of this application, and on what may be termed the front or obverse side of said tab `I provide an integral .rib of approximately inverted U-shape adapted to receive the ball of the thumb of a person who migiht be engaged in filling the bottle with hot water, and on the reverse side of said tab I form an integral rib extending transversely of the same and of special outline intended to be effective as a means by'whi'ch the outer portion of the index or first linger of the hand may enga e said tab and effectively coperate with t e thumb applied on the other side of said tab in preventin 'the bottle from slipping through the ngers or from the hand under the increasing weight of the bottle while water is poured into the same, My invention therefore resides primarily in the tab applied at one side of the mouth of a lhotwater bottle by which the bottle may be safely and conveniently held yby a person engaged in filling the same with hot water, and the entire purpose of the invention is to provide a tab of such construction that the bottle may be securely held. It is well known that the tabs of hot-water bottles have a. somewhat smooth and slippery surface, especially when wet, and that there is a pronounced liability of the water-bottle slipping from between the thumb and flngers of an attendant, while the bottle is being filled with water, and this difficulty is one that my invention obviates by providing the tab at the side of the mouth of the bottle with such surfaces as will enable the attendant to firmly grip the tab and support the bottle, even under theincreasing weight of the hot water poured into the bottle and notwithstanding the fact that the ingers of the hand of the attendant may be wet or the tab may be wet and the danger of the bottle slipping from the hand be thereby increased.

My invention therefore resides in the provision on a hot water bottle, regardless of its other details of construction, of a exible tab at one side of the mouth thereof of a character enabling the attendant to securely grip the same and support the bottle while the latter is being filled with hot water.

The invention will be fully understood from the detailed description hereinafter presented, reference being had to the accom* panying drawings, in which:

Fig. 4 is a sectional view corresponding with Fig. 2 but illustrating the method of supporting the bottle between the thumb and fore-finger or lingers of a hand by means of the tab at one side of the mouth of the bottle when the bottle is to be filled with hot water, a portion only of the mouth of the bottle being shown.

In the drawings, 10 designates the hot water bottle, ordinarily made of rubber, 11 the mouth-portion thereof and 12 a tab integral with the bottle and projecting upwardly at one side of the said mouth portion and intended to be gripped between the thumb and fore-finger or fingers of a person supporting the bottle while the latter is to be filled with hot water. The mouth 11 will finally be closed by a suitable stopper of any suitable character so as to confine thev hot water in the bottle, and this stopper' may be of varied construction and preferably of the construction shown in Letters- Patent granted to me December 9, 1913, No. 1,080,659, for Stopper for hot-water bottles. In the construction of stopper shown in the drawings, 18 designates the sleeve portion rigidly secured within the mouth 11, and 19 a screw plug adapted to said sleeve. My present invention is not, however, limited toany special form of stopper for the hot water bottle.

My invention relates to the supporting tab 12 having thereon and integrally therewith effective surfaces for enabling the tab to be gripped by and preventing the same from slipping from the hand of the attendant who may be supporting the bottle with one hand while, with the other hand, a receptacle is hcldand water is poured therefrom into the mouth 11 of the bottle. In

A"the preferred construction I form, integrally, on the obverse face of the tab 12, a rib 18 which is approximately in the form of an inverted U, as shown in Fig. 1, and on the reverse face of said tab I form, integrally, a transverse rib 14 of the outline shown in Fig. 3, which rib 14 is near the upper end of the tab 12 and has a central downwardly curved thickened portion 15 and at each end thereof upwardly curved portions 16 of less thickness than the portion 15, this form of rib having been determined by me as the most efiicient to be held by t-he two forward sections of the first linger of a hand, as I attempt to illustrate in Fig. 4. The U-shaped rib 13 on the obverse side of the tab 12 is very efiicient in that it receives the ball of the thumb, as illustrated in Fig. 4, and serves to permit the thumb to have an effective gripping action on one side of the tab 12, while the fore-finger of the hand, supported by the second-finger of the same hand, grips the reverse side of the said tab.

Normally the tab 12 will stand vertically, as shown in Fig. 2, but when the bottle is to be filled with hot water and the tab 12 is held by the hand of the attendant, said tab, being fiexibly connected with the bottle 10, will extend or be bent laterally into a substantially horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 4.

My invention resides more particularly in the tab 12 flexibly connected with the bottle and having on its opposite sides means to prevent the tab from slipping front the hand of the attendant under the increasing weight which the bottle has while being filled with hot-water, and I present in the drawings the preferred form of ribs on the opposite faces of said tab for accomplishing the purposes intended. These ribs may, of course, vary in dimensions and outline but the drawings illustrate the most elhcient and preferred embodiment of the invention known to me.

The invention will be quite sufficiently understood from the foregoing description, without material added explanation. rlhe tab 12 equipped with ribs, as described, adds greatly to the convenience in handling the bottle 10, and contributes a large amount of safety in the handling of said bottle, since considerable difiiculty is known to exist in holding hot water bottles with one hand, while with the other hand the bottle is being filled with hot water. Should the hot water bottle slip from the hand, inconveniences would result, and it is frequently the case in filling a hot water bottle, that some of the hot water will spatter on the hand of the person holding the same, and this of itself is frequently sufcient to cause a person holding on to the tab 12 to slightly lessen the grip on the same, with the result that the bottle will slip from the hand, whereas with my invention the surfaces alforded by the ribs on the opposite sides of the tab 12, to a considerable extent obviate the danger, even under the shock of having some hot water spatter on the hand, of the attendant sufiiciently releasing the tab to permit the bottle to fall. I regard the tab 12, constructed as described, of very great benefit in the handling and use of hot water bottles. After the bottle has been filled its mouth will be closed by a suitable stopper, as usual. After the hot water bottle has been emptied it will be hung up by the bottom tab so as to drain, the stopper then having been removed.

My invention therefore resides in a hot water bottle having the tab 12 equipped with suitable projecting ribs on its opposite faces to permit the attendant to securely hold the same and support the bottle while the latter is being filled with hot water, and more specifically my invention resides in a hot water bottle having the tab.12 equipped with the special ribs 13, 14 designed by me as being the most efficient for the purposes intended.

What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:

1. A hot water bottle having an integral tab at the mouth thereof formed integrally with projections for facilitating the manual gripping of the tab while the bottle is being filled with water.

2. A hot water bottle having an integral tab at the mouth thereof formed integrally on opposite faces with ribs adapted to facilitate the manual gripping of the tab while the bottle is being lled with water.

3. A hot water bottle having an integral tab at the mouth thereof formed integrally on its obverse face with a rib of approximately inverted U-shape to receive within the outline of the same the ball of the thumb of a hand supporting the bottle while the latter is being filled.

4:. A hot water bottle having an integral tab at the mouth thereof formed integrally on its reverse face with a transverse rib having a downwardly curved middle portion and upwardly curved end portions, said rib being adapted to be engaged by the forelinger of a hand supporting the hot water bottle during the lling of the same.

5. A hot water bottle having an integral tab at the mouth thereof formed integrally on its obverse face with a rib of approximately inverted U-shape and on its reverse face with a transverse rib, said ribs being adapted to facilitate the manual gripping of the tab while the bottle is being filled with water.
