SEWING-MACHINE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MARK THOMAS DENNE, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Rushd'en, Northamptonshire, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Sewing-Machines, of Which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to improvements in sewing machines of the type known as outsole stitchers, used for stitching the outsole to the welt or to the middle sole of boots or shoes and in which a curved needle and a curved awl are employed, and it comprises the combination with the stitch-forming mechanism of such machines of threadmeasuring means controlled by the presser foot and comprising a pivotally-mountedpull-off lever coupled on the one hand to the presser foot and on the other hand to the take-up lever by slotted links to draw oil a length of thread for each stitch proportional to the thickness of the work. It also comprises the combination with the stitch-forming mechanism, of a presser foot and means hereinafter described under the control of the operator to control the clamping force of the presser foot and the amount of the lift thereof.

Referring tothe said drawings, 1 indicates the head of the machine and 1 is a cam shaft on which the necessary cams or cam cylinder for operating the mechanism of the machine are or is mounted in an oiltight casing 2.

10. These levers 9 and 10 are actuated from cams carried by the cam shaft 1*.
In accordance with the invention the presser-foot or channel guide 28 is carried on an arm of a lever 29 mounted on a sleeve forming part of the needle and awl pivot. The lever 29 gears with a lever 30 carried on a suitable shaft 31 on which a handle is fixed whereby the operator may raise the presser foot 2-8 to enable him to insert or remove the work. The lever 30 referred to has a second gear segment which meshes with a pinion 33 forming part of or mounted on a shaft 3 1, on which is also mounted a toothed or ratchet wheel 35 and which shaft is carried by a rocking lever.
On the spindle or shaft 31 on which the handle referred to is mounted and supported in bearings in the machine frame or head and free to rock is a sleeve 36 the said rocking movement of which is derived from a camlever 38 through the intermediary of a lever 37 mounted on said sleeve. When the sleeve 36 is rocked it imparts movement to a rocking lever 39 in which the spindle 34: carrying the toothed pinion 33 and the ratchet wheel 35 is mounted.
Mounted loosely on the sleeve 36 is a plate #10 carrying two pawls 11, 42 one or other of which may be in engagement with the ratchet Wheel 35. Said plate 40 is normally held in its central position by a spring bolt 43 against the action of which the plate may be moved to either side and by which the plate can be returned to its normal position.
By the means described:
(a) the presser foot may be allowed to be free at which time it may be raised by the operator by means of the handle referred to;
(b) the presser foot may be locked and then forcibly clamped on to the work to compress or consolidate the same during the formation of the stitch;
(c) the presser foot may be unclamped and lifted to permit the work feed to operate;
(d) the amount of the clamping action and the degree of lift is under the control of the operator.
When the ratchet wheel 35 is in position between the pawls so that neither pawl engages the teeth the operator can raise the presser by means of the handle provided for suchpurpose. \Vhen the arm 39 carrying the ratchet wheel 35 is moved in one direction one ofthe teeth immediately stops the further rota:

For example if one pawl (say the right hand one) the ratchet wheel 35 so that this almost immediately engages the said ratchet wheel whenit is moved to the right, a clamping of approximately one eighth of an inch will' result.
A similar movement will result if the left hand pawl be similarly adjusted.
The take-111167 (see Figs. 4 and 5) is. mounted upon a rock shaft 68 having at its outer end an extension 69 with which a yoke a shaft 72 having another and cam operated lever 7 3 engages. Said roll is carried on one arm of a ball-crank 79 on one end of a rock shaft 7 6 which carries at its other end a lever 77 that is' connected by a link 78 to a crank pin also connected to said rock shaft 76. has a slotted end fitting a pin 80 on the take-up arm 67. From the measuring off roll 75 the thread passes vertically through a locking device described. lVhen the main take-up arm'67 descends to complete the stitch the thread is locked but the link 78 being operated by. the pin 80 pulls upon the ball-crank lever 79 causing a certain length of thread to be drawn off the tension wheel 74 ready for the next stitch.

The arrangement and construction" of the parts are such that movement of the :roll 75 is not prevented and when therefore the main take-up 67 operatefsto actuate the roll 75 it only moves the latter for the remainder of the distance representing the difference between the full stroke of the pin on the take-up arm and the amount thatthe thread roll 75 has been permitted or' compelled-to rise by the increased thickness and thus the length of thread measured off is strictly proportional to the-thickness of the work if the parts are correctly proportioned in the firstinstance.

In a sewing machine, the combination with a work table and a presser foot carried by a lever which is pivotally mounted on a horizontal axis and has a rearwardly extending arm, of means for raising the said presser foot by hand consisting of a gear segment on the said rearwardly extending arm and an actuating lever pivotally mounted on an axis arallel t0 the aforesaid axis and provided with a handle and a gear segment which meshes with the aforesaid gear segment, and means for alternately raising and depressing the said presser foot to an adjustable extent automatically, to permit the work to be fed and to exert a clamping force upon the work, the said means consisting of a second gear segment on the aforesaid actuating lever, a sleeve mounted loosely upon the axis of the said actuating Gopies of this patent may be obtained for lever, a lever arm fixed to the said sleeve and engaged with a cam operated lever by which the sleeve is oscillated through a fixed arc, a second arm fixed to said sleeve, a shaft rotatably carried by the said second arm, a pinion fixed on the said shaft and in gear with the said second gear segment on the actuating lever, and a locking device comprising a ratchet Wheel fixed on the pinion shaft, a plate pivotally mounted on the aforesaid sleeve and normally held in a nonoperative position by a sprinu bolt, and two pawls adjustably mounted on the said plateone at each side of the said ratchet wheel-and adapted to engage the said ratchet wheel alternately when the said sleeve is oscillated.
