N0. 130,115l l Patented Aug. 6,1872.

#M Mw m- 7%55 www UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN W. ELLIOTT, OF LOOUST MOUNT, VIRGINIA.
IMPROVEMENT |N PLows. f
.description of the nature thereof, sufficient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to fully understand and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of this specification, in which- Figures l and 2 are views of opposite sides of the plow. Figs. 3 and 4 are detached views. Fig. 5 is an end view of a portion of the plow.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention relates to certain improvements in plows, hereinafter more fully set forth.
Referring to the drawing, A represents the plow-beam; B, the mold-board; and O, the land-side. D represents the standard, which is curved as it extends from the beam to the land-side and continued in a right line along the land-side, to which it is bolted.V Its upper end is turned at an angle, E, which rests on the beam, and a bolt, F, passes through the standard and beam, so that the angle and bolt firmly hold the beam in place. This is assisted by a brace, G, which extends from the bolt F to the handles H. The two handles H rise and branch ont from the inner face of the land-side, and both are secured thereto by bolts J J', one, J, of which passes through both handles and the land-side near its upper end, and the other bolt, J', similarly near the lower end orheel. From the bolt J passes a brace, K, which extends to the mold-board B and is secured thereto. The handles are secured to the beam A by a bolt,
L, which passes through the brace G, thev handles, the beam, and a round or block, a, which is between the handles to keep them apart. A series of horizontal openings, b b, is formed in the handles, one above the other,
' for the' vertical adjustment of the beam, which is accomplished by withdrawing the bolt L,
then raising or lowering the beam, and insert- .ing the bolt in either of the openings in the handles relatively to the desired degree of penetration of the plow, the bolt F acting as a fulcrum. M represents a forked wedge, which is to be inserted between the beam and handles or the handles and brace G and straddle the bolt L. VThe beam is'given land or furrow at the end by inserting the wedge between the beam and handles to throw the beam end to the right, and inserting the same between the beam and brace G for throwing the end to the left, the nuts of the bolts being rst loosened, and afterward tightened when the wedge is applied.
Itwill be seen that the handles and standard are on the same side of the beam A. The curved standard renders the plow able to operate in any kind of land (however rough) without choking or failure to go through, and runs clear, since, by its curvature, it is set back and is strengthened and readily cuts the soil, &c. The angle or hook of the standard which rests on the beam gives the plow a side draft, and so places the beam to the left side'of the mold-board that it will not come in contact with the soil as it rises from the mold-board on the right, and consequently permits the plow to run in rough land. The beam is also placed on the left of the handles as well as on the left of the standard, so that the beam sets straight with the land-side.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The forked wedge M, in combination with the handles H H, block c, bolt L, and beam A, as and for the purpose set forth..
2. The handles H H rising from the landside, and provided with adjusting holes b b, beam A adjustable as described, curved standard D having a bent portion, E, and braces G K, all constructed and operated as set forth.
The above signed by me this 19th of March, 1872.
JOHN W. ELLIOTT.
