To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, Forensi: D. LUCKEY, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Logan, in the county of Cache and State of Utah, have invented certain new andY useful Improvements in Padlocks, of which the fol-` lowing is a specification.'
This invention relates to the class oflocks and latches,and more particularly yto a no-vel and improved padlock. p
The invention has for its primary object the provision of an improved padlock having a novel key operated mechanism for releasing the shackle, the device being so constructed as to prevent it from being operated by an instrument or piece of wire, and in fact, anything but with the proper key.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved lock which is simple in construction, economical to produce, strong and durable, and efficient in use..
lVith the above and other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises the various novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be more fully described herein and set fort-h with particularity in the claims appended hereto.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, in which like reference characters indicate the corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view' of a padlock constructed in accordance with my invention, the shackle being shown in a closed or locked positionl in connection with the parts associated therewith,

Referring to the drawings in detail, my improved padlock is shown as comprising a casing 10 of rectangular formation, in its preferred embodiment, and comprising sections 11 and 12 itted together and secured at suitable points by rivets or dowel pins 13.
The casing sections are interiorly hollowed out suilicientlyto accommodate the working parts, and as shown, a slot 14 is provided in onecorner of the casing between theopposed sections, to -pivotally receive one end of a curved shackle 15, the pivot being designated 16 and the shackle being extended beyond the pivot and notched to receive one end of the usual form of opening spring 17. acting betweenthe adjacent wall of the casing and the adjacent end of the shackle, as shown.
The free end of the shackle is beveled, as shofwn at 18, and provided with a transverse keeper or slot 19 running from its inner to itsouter edge, and said shackle enters a slot 20 also formed between adjacent sections of the casing at the edge oppositeto the edge to which the shackle is pivoted and within the walls thereof.
Coperating with the shackle in order to hold the same in a closed or locked position, is a catch or bolt 21 pivoted at its lower end, as shown at 22, and normally held into engagement at its upper end with the slot 19 through the medium of a tapered right angular engaging or nose portion 23, through the medium of a contractile spring 24 anchored to the casing and connected intermediately to the pivoted bolt or catch.
In order to withdraw the catch for per-` mitting the shackle to spring open, thereby opening the padlock to release objects held thereby, there is provided a sliding block 25 having its upwardly extending portion 26 pivoted to the catch 21 above the spring 24 and a depending portion 27 'serving as a supporting and guiding means within the casing. This block extends horizontally and is formed at its free end with a circular socket 28 receiving therein for rotation a barrel 29, which latter projects through the edge of the casing corresponding to that edge adjacentrto which the shackle is pivoted, instead of to the opposite edge or at the bottom of the casing, as is usual, and is pro v vided with a tortuous grooved slot 30 axially l lock.

The spring 17 Will then immediately act to open the shackle, While in order to engage vthe shackle, it is `simply swung against the action of the spring 17 into the slot 20 andthe spring 24 Will cause lthe engaging end por- A tion or nose 23 to enter the slot 19, afterthe beveled portion 18 has moved the catch or bolt 21 inwardly by engagement with the rounded or beveled nose portion thereof, and as the springs are -made relatively strong,
