` scannen-FRONT AND AnArTEBfnING THEREFOR.
` The invention relates to improvements in `furnace lfronts and adapter rings therefor, as described, in the present specification and illustratedV in the accompanying drawings that form part of the same.
'The invention consists essentially of the Vnovel means employed for standardizing vfurnace fronts.
f l IIn marine boilers of the well known internally fired return tube or so-called toV the circular furnace mouths. These fronts carry the coaling doors, and where forced draft is used there are airrchambers and valves for regulating the supply of air over the fire, and also side valves for regulating the air supply to the ash pits.
`Manufacturers of Scotch boilers have a variety of methods of fitting the furnaces Vinto the front plates, `some preferring to flange the front boiler plates out, others flange them inward, and some even flange the furnace mouths over circular holes cut in the boiler front plate. It followsthat to make a proper joint between front and furnace, and to take care of different diameters of furnaces and the variety of arrangements by which they are tted to boiler front plates, many different forms of fronts have to be cast.
Also in a Scotch boiler with three furnaces equipped with forced draft there Speccation of Letters Patent.

accommodate a front from a stock lot to any boiler, marine Orland, within reason, that is to say, a standardized front for a type of boiler, in which considerable variations occur in the many makes, to facilitate the replacement and installation of furnace fronts, and generally to provide a furnace part, which will insure economy and servicej ability.

the furnace front showing boiler and fire Like numerals of referenceindicate corized `front 1 shown in Fig. l of the drawing is made to suit any boiler of the well known internally fired return tube or so called Scotch type, in which cast iron fronts are attached to the circular furnace mouths. The said front has the feed opening 2, and the wall 3 below said feed opening is thickened to compensate for the adapter ring 4: thereby avoiding the necessity Of inserting a dead plate.
`The adapter ring 4 is the main feature of this invention and is shown in Fig. l as of disk form, having the enlargement Or annular flange 5 at the inner edge, which projects inwardly in the direction of the opening in the furnace structure made to receive the cast fronts and herein termed the furnace mouth and in fitting the ring to the furnace, the said flange 5 is just within the plate wall 6 of the furnace mouth, but clear of said wall and also clear of the baflle plate Of the furnace front as shown at 7, said clearances in the one case enabling the ring with the front to be-readily inserted in place and in the other case facilitating the mounting of theqrling 4 `on the front 1. g l
The ring 4 is secured to the front 1 by the bolts 9 extending through said ring 4 and the wall 10 of the front.
The ring 4 is rigidly secured to the wall 6 and the latter rigidly secured 'to the boiler plate 8 and as the front 1 is rigid with said ring, the attachment of the latter constitutes the installation of said front.Y
The furnace front 1 may be stocked in considerable quantities, as the front plate and fuel passage are practically the same forall and the back plate, so long as it `has a plain surface near the edge, applicable to many furnaces with said adapter` ring to connect it to the furnace mouth.
rPhe ring 11 in Fig. 2 is slightly modified as the flangek12 corresponding to the flange 5 projects inwardly in the direction of the furnace mouth intermediate of the width of the disk ring but nearer the outer edge and the said ring itself projects beyond the furnace front to form an extension thereof and is secured to the plate Wall 13 of the furnace lmouth, the latter lbeing secured to the boiler plate 14, said ring being secured to the furnace front by the bolts 15.
The ring in Fig. 3 is in angle form that is to say the disk section 16 has the flange 17 approximately equal to the width of the disk section and projecting from the inner edge and secured to the plate wall 18 of the furnace mouth, the latter being secured to the boiler plate 19.
The ring in Fig. 4 is the reverse of the ring in Figf, as the iange 20 projects from the disk section 21 at the outer edge of the latter and-engages 'the iplate wall 22 of the ,-'Gopies of thi-s patent may be obtained for furnace mouth, the latter` being secured to the boiler plate 23.
edge and the 'other at or near the middle,
these flanges" being. shown in Contact with the plate wall 27 of the furnace mouth, the latter being here shown in a different position than in the other figures, for it is between the adapter ring and the boiler plate 28.
This adapter -ring may be secured to the back plate A`of the furnace front by .cap screws indicated Ain Fig. iby the numeral 29, thereby facilitating the adjustment of the furnace front toithe yfurnace mouth.
`Many departures may be made from the construction without departing from the spirit of the invention so long as they are Within the claims for novelty following.
'What I claim is: Y
1.-Ina furnace front Acomprising a "front plate anda back plate, an annular plateof metal having an annular flange projecting from the rear face thereof and'litting to the plate wall of the furnace mouth and'said,
back plate vbeing secured tothe front face of said annular plate.
2. In a furnace front comprising a front plate. and a back plate, an' endless angle bar having a plain front .face and rearwardly projecting flan-ge projections and secured on the side of `its plain face to said back plate and meeting the plate wall of the furnace mouth on its flanged side. v
