To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, Ci-insrnn MolTnIL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Presser-Feet for Sewing-Ma chines, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the figures of reference marked thereon,
The invention relates to new and useful improvements in a presser foot for sewing machines, and more particularly to a presser foot which cooperates with a feeding and stitching mechanism for joining or covering the edges of fabric sections.
An object of the invention is to construct a presser foot of the above character which has a main section rigid with the supporting shank and a yielding section on each side of said main section whereby joined fabric sections one of which consists of a single layer while the other section consists of a plurality of layers, may be passed in either direction under the foot and the yielding sections on the opposite sides of the main section will move vertically so as to accommodate these varying thicknesses in the fabric sections.
A further object of the invention is to provide a presser foot of the above character with a projecting portion on the main section of the foot which may be utilized for guiding the fabric sections underneath the main section of the foot and in proper line for covering the edges of said sections.
A further object of the invention is to provide a presser foot of the above character with means for clamping the stationary member of the trimming mechanism to said forwardly projecting portion on the main section of the foot.
These and other objects will in part be obvious and will in part be hereinafter more fully disclosed.

My improved presser foot consists of a supporting shank 1, which carries the main,
foot section 2. This supporting shank is provided with a socket or recess 3 for the presser bar. It is also provided with a rearwardly projecting arm 4, which is slotted to engage the auxiliary presser bar of the machine to prevent the presser foot from turning on said presser bar. Said main section of the presser foot is formed with needle openings 5 and 6, each of which has a stitch tongue 7. The needles 8 and 9 operate in the needleopenings 5 and 6 respectively, of the presser' foot. On one side of the main foot section is an auxiliary foot section 10, which is supported by a shank 11 and this shank is mounted to slide vertically from the main shank 1. A cover plate 15 is secured to the main shank of the presser foot and the shank of the auxiliary foot 10 freely7 slides up and down in rear of this cover plate. A spring 16 is attached to the main shank 1 by a screw 17 and this spring extends upwardly and thence forwardly over the shank 11 and bears on the upper end of a lug 18 formed integral with said shank 11. This spring yieldingly presses the auxiliary section 10 downwardly. A screw 19 threaded into an opening 19 in the main shank exthickness will be held and tends through an elongated slot 20 in the shank 11 and limits the downward movement of the yielding section. On the other side of the main section 27 of the foot is a second auxiliary section 21 which is likewise provided with a supporting shank 22 between ribs 13a and 14a in the side face of the main shank 1, and is held therein by a cover Vplate 24. A spring 25 similar to the spring 16, bears against a lug 26 on the upper end of the shank 22 and normally7 forces said auxiliary section 21 downwardly. A screw 27 extends through an elongated slot in the shank 22 similar to the elongated slot 20 in the shank l1 and limits the downward movement of this auxiliary section 21. The ribs lll and 14: respectively limit the upward movement of said auxiliary foot sections.
The main section of the foot 2 is provided with a forwardly projecting portion 28. This section is raised above the lower face of the main section 2, as clearly indicated at 29, Fig. 4. The projecting portion 28 is turned upwardly and is also provided with a seat for the stationary trimmer blade 30 nof the trimming mechanism. This blade is secured to the foot portion by a clamping plate 31 which is held in place by a screw 32. The projecting portion 28 extends laterally over the auxiliary portion 21, but is spaced above the same, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The auxiliary portion 10 has a laterally projecting portion 33 which extends in front of the main section 2. The inner side face 34; of this auxiliary portion 10 is spaced from the inner side face 35 of the projecting portion 28 and thus forms a guiding channel 36. The side face 35 is substantially in line with the center of the stitch tongue 7 of the needle opening 5. A movable trimmerl blade, indicated in dotted lines at` 37, cooperates with the stationary trimmer blade 30.
My improved presser foot is particularly adapted for joining and covering the edges of sections of fabric. As clearly shown in Figs. 8 and 9, three sections of fabric a, b and c are joined and covered. These sections have their edges turned up as they are presented tothe presser foot, so that these edges may be trimmed. The turned edges pass along the guiding channel 36. The trimming mechanism trims the upper edges of these sections. As shown in Fig. 8, the sections are fed underneath the presser foot, so that the two layers a and b are on the right and when in this position the main section of the foot will bear upon the sections to be joined adjacent the meeting edges; the section 10 rests on the two layers, whileA section 21 is depressed beneath the lower surface of the main section and bears on the single thickness c so that the single guided with the same efficiency as the two thicknesses.
In Fig. 9 of the drawing, the joined sections are shown as fed through the machine in an opposite direction from that shown in Fig. 8. This view shows the layers a and c on the left while the layer b is on the right. The section 10 extends below the main section and bears on the single layer of fabric.
The invention above described is particularly adapted for joining and covering the leg sections of a garment. This seam leads to the seam which joins the front stay strip of the garment. In Figs. 6 and- 7 of the drawings, I have shown a garment consisting of the leg portions Z and Z. This garment also has a stay or facing strip f which extends to the seam s. In Fig. 6, I have shown the garment fed to the machine in the direction of the arrow in which case the yielding section 21 of the presser foot bears on a single thickness in crossing the facing strip and the yielding section 10 bears on said facing strip and the other fabric section. In Fig. 7, I have shown the garment fed to the stitching mechanism in the opposite direction, in which case the yielding section 10 bears on the single thickness as the facing strip is crossed and the yielding sectionY 21 bears 'on said facing strip of the other fabric section. It will thus be seen that the garment may be stitched in eitherV effective to permit the crossing of the facino strip.
The presser foot is also provided'with a strip deflector 37 which is secured to the main shank of the foot by a clamping screw 38. This strip defiector also has a projecting lug 39, which is soldered to the main section of the presser foot. Said strip deiector projects across the channel 36 and is spaced sufiiciently above the yielding section 10 to permit the same to move u and down. It will be noted that the strip deiector and the stationary member of the trimming mechanism are both carried by the main section of the presser foot which is rigid with the supporting shank. This arrangement of the stationary member of the trimming mechanism insures an even trimming ofD the edges which are to be covered.
It is obvious that minor changes in the details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A presser foot for sewing machines including in combination, a supporting shank, a main section rigidly connected to said supporting shank, said main section having a needle opening therein, an auxiliary section extending along one side of the main section, means for yieldingly supporting said auxiliary section, whereby the same may move vertically, a second auxiliary section extending along the other side of said main section, means for yieldingly supporting said second auxiliary section whereby the same may move vertically, said rst named yielding section at its front end being laterally spaced from a portion of the main section to provide a guiding channel for the edges of the fabric sections being stitched, and said guiding' channel having one of its walls substantially in line with the center of said needle opening.
2. A presser foot for sewing machines including in combination, a supporting shank, a main section rigidly connected to said supporting shank, an auxiliary section extending along one side of said main section, means for yieldingly supporting said auxiliary section on said shank, a second auxiliary section extending along the other side of said main section, means for yieldingly supporting said second auxiliary section on said shank, the .said main section of the presser foot having means for supporting the stationary member of a` trimming mechanism, and said first named auxiliary section and a portion of the main section of the presser toot being spaced from each other in advance of the trimming mechanism for guiding the edges to be trimmed to said trimming mechanism. l
3. A presser foot for sewing machines including in combination, a supporting shank, a main section rigidly connected to said supporting shank, an auxiliary section extending along one side of said main section, means Jfor yieldingly supporting said auxiliary section on said shank, a second auxiliary section extending along the other side olf'said main section, means for yieldingly supporting said second auxiliary section on said shank, the said main section of the presser foot having means for supporting the stationary member of a trimming mechanism, said first named auxiliary section and a portion of the main section of the foot being spaced in advance of the trimming mechanism for guiding the edges to be trimmed to said trimming mechanism, and said main section of the presser foot having a needle opening therein said needle opening being substantially in line with one wall of the guiding space and disposed in rear of the trimming mechanism.

A presser foot for sewing machines including in combination, a: supporting shank, a main section rigidly connected to said supporting shank, an auxiliary section extending along one side of said main section, means for yieldingly supporting said auxiliary section on said shank, a: second auxiliary section. extending along the other side of said main section, means for yieldingly supporting said second auxiliary section on said shank, the said main section of the presser foot having means for supporting the stationary member of a trimming mechanism, said lirst named auxiliary section and a portion of the main section of the presser root being spaced from each other in advance of the trimming mechanism for guiding the edges to be trimmed to said trimming mechanism, and a strip deflector rigidly secured to the main portion of the presser foot and extending across said guiding space between Jthe trimming mechanism and the needle openings in said presser foot.

A presser foot for sewing machines including in combination, a supporting shank, a main section rigidly connected to said supporting shank, said main section having a needle opening therein, an auxiliary section extending along one side of the main section, means for yieldingly supporting said auxiliary section, whereby the same may move vertically, a second auxiliary section extending along the other side of said main section, and means for yieldingly supporting said second auxiliary section whereby the same may move vertically, the liront portions of said auxiliary sections projecting inwardly in advance of the main section and spaced from each other to form a guiding channel, said main section having a portion extending over one of said auxiliary sections but spaced therefrom and supporting the stationary member of a trimming mechanism.

A presser foot for sewing machines including in combination, a: supporting shank, a main section rigidly connected to said supporting shank, said presser foot having a needle opening formed therein and a fabricguiding channel extending rearwardly from the front end of the presser foot and in line with and terminating in advance of the needle opening, said presser foot having means associated therewith and movable with the main section for supporting the stationary trimming blade of a trimming mechanism operating to trim the upturned edges of fabric sections led through said guiding channel, said presser foot including yieldable fabric engaging members extending lengthwise of the presser foot and disposed upon opposite sides of said channel, said members being independently and vertically "yieldable relative to said main section and 10 operating to compensate for fabric sections CHESTER MCNEIL.
