To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 'I fWIILLIA BLO GEs'r, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have inventedfcertain new and useful Improvements in Priming Devices for Internal-Combustion Engines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others'skilled in the art to which it appertains tomake and use the same. This invention' relates to improvements in priming devicesfor internal combustion engines,one object of the "invention beinglto improve and simplify priming devices of that-type which areadaptable for connection with the manifold and provide means for atomi'zing fuel into the manifold when'the crank or self starter is operated, to facilitate the prompt starting of the en- '1116. b A further object is to provide a priming structure of thetype specified, in which the atomizer element can be readily adjusted. With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction andcombinations of" parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims. j j

My improved priming device is supported by the intake pipe and comprises a reservoir 5 to receive a supply of gasolene, a
threaded nipple 6 being connected with the V reservoir and screwed through the wall of the intake pipe. a l if The wall of thereservoir is made with an interior enlargement 7 having an opening 8 extending through the wall of the reservoir for the-passage of the shank portion of the nipple 6. A tube 14: communicates with the air duct nipplefi so as to terminate within the intake pipe, preferably at or near the longitudinal centerthereof. The free'end of the air tubeis closed, and is provided near such closed end, with transverse openings 15 and 16. A fuel tube 17 (smaller in diameter than the air tube 1 1) communicates with the fuel duct 11 and'its free open end is bent laterally and enters the hole 16 of theair tube, so as to terminate within the latter and discharge through the hole 15 in said tube. The tubes 14: and 17 thus form an atomizer for spraying combined'air, and

The reservoir '5 may be'supplied with gasolene through a pipe 21connected with a suitablesourceof supply conveniently located and any suitable manually operable valve devices not shown) may-be employed for controllingthe flowof gasolene to the reservoir.
A float 22 is located within the reservoir and provided with a stem 23 which passes through an air hole 24 in the cover 25 of said largement at its upper end which constitutes.
a valve 26 for normally closing said an hole. WVhen the reservoir is supplied with gasolene, the float will rise and lift the valve 26 to open the airinlet to admit air for the atomizer, and when the engine shall have been primed, the reservoir will have been emptied and the valve 26 will be closed by the descent'of the float.
In the form of the invention shown in Fig. 3, the reservoir is provided with a swinging cover 27 having a thumb piece 28 to facilitate the opening of the reservoir to permit the filling of the same with gasoe len e, and saidcover is retained normally in position by the engagement of a tit 29 thereon with a notch 30in the upper end of the reservoir wall. During the primingoperation, the cover 26 will be moved aside to admit air.
When the engine is being started (by cranking in the usual way, or by means of V a self-starter, with the throttle closed or partly closed), the suction created by the operation of the pistons of the engine will cause air to enter the larger tube 1314 and to be ejected from the nozzle at 15 into the intake pipe, thus causing gasolene to *be drawn through the smaller tube 17 and discharged or sprayed into the intake pipe and manifold, from whence it is drawn into the en inc,
ther slight changes might be made in the details of construction of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof or limiting its scope and hence I do not wish to restrict myself to the precise details herein set forth.
Having fully described my invention what I claim'as new and. desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is i 1. In a priming device, the combination with a tank, a nipple to communicate therewith and adapted to enter the intake of an engine, and an atomizer at the end of the nipple which enters the intake, and means adjustably connecting the nipple and tank whereby'said. nipple maybe turned to cause the atomizer to discharge longitudinally of the intake. whether the latter be disposed vertically, horizontally or in an inclined position.
2. In a priming device, the combination with a reservoir, of a nipple projecting therefrom and adapted for connection with the intake of an engine, said nipple having air and fuel ducts, and a duct in the reservoir communicating with the fuel duct in the nipple and with the lower portion of the reservoir, and an atomizer comprising an air tube communicating with the air tube in the nipple and closed at its free'end, said air tube having lateral holes, and a fuel tube communicating with the fuel duct in the nipple and entering one ofthe lateral holes of the air tube.

In a priming device, thecombination with a reservoir having aninternal enlargement in the wall thereofprovidedwith a fuel duct and a lateral opening, of a"nipple voir and adapted for connection with the intake of. an engine, an atomizercarriedby said adjustable nipple,,ai'r and 'fuelfd'ucts in the nipple communicating with said atomizer, and a duct, in the reservoir connecting the lower portion of the latter with the fuel duct in the nipple. 1 V

In a priming device, the combination with a reservoinhaving an air inlet,'of a nipple connected with saidlreservoirf and adapted for connection with'theintake of an engine, an atomizer carried by said nipple and communicating with the inter'ior ofthe reservoir, a float in] said reservoir and a valve connected with said fioat for opening and closing said air inlet.
