AUXILIARY PRIMING- AND AIR-CONTROLLING- DEVICE FOR INTERNAL-COMBUSTION ENGINES.
To all 'whomit may concern:
Be it known that I, GoTTLIEB F. ZUOKER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Berwyn, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Auxiliary Priming and Air-Controlling Devices for Internal-Combustion Engines,of which the following is a. specification.

My invention-relates to improvementsin auxiliary priming and air controlling devices for internal combustion engines, and has for its object the production of a device of this character through the medium of which an engine may be readily and easily primed to facilitate starting of the same and whereby the air supplied to the engine after the latter has startedmay be controlled in order to obtain the bestpossible mixture and still conserve fuel. .With these objects in view, the invention consists. in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

The preferred. form of construction as illustrated in the drawings comprises a plate 7 which is provided with a bracket 8 wherebythe same may be rigidly mounted upon the "dash board or other suitable support on the automobile inconnection with which the device is used. The plate 7 is provided with a circularrecess 9 at its upper side which is adapted to snugly receive the lower end of thebody. part 10 of the device-which is rotatablymounted upon said plate 7.

is interposed between the head of bolt 11 and said spring serving to hold the parts 7'ajnd 10 in close engagement with each other. A suitable packing 13 arranged at the upper side of member 10 embraces the bolt 11 to prevent leakage.
Connected with the under side of plate 7 is a fuel supply pipe 14 which, in practice, connects with the source of other hydrocarbon used in connection with the vehicle. Formed in the lower end of bolt 11-is a passage 15, the lower end of which communicates with the supply pipe 14, the upper end of saidpassage being in open communication vwiththe interior of member 10. r l
Formed in the plate 7 is an elongated air opening 16 and an outlet opening 17, and a pipe 18 leading from the opening 17 for communication, in the installation of the device, with the intake manifold of the engine in. connection with which the device is used. Formedin the under side of member 10 for registration with the opening 16 is an opening 19 of corresponding form, and also formed in the under side of member 10 are two spaced openings 20and 20 adapted for individual registration with the opening 17. The openings 20 and 20 are so arranged that, when the opening 20 is in full registrationwith the opening 17, opening 19 will be in full registration with the opening 16 as clearly as seen in Fig. 4, and, when the opening 20. is in full registration with the opening 17, the opening 19 will be out of registration with opening 16. Moreover openings 20and 20 are spaced apart at such a distance that, when the member 10 is in intermediate position, that is a position midway between the two positions above mentioned, the openings 17 will be registering with neither 20 or 20. This rotary adjustment of the member 10 is effected through thelmedium of .a suitable handle'or lever 21 and a finger 22 on the member 10 cooperating with'the graduations 23 on the plate 7 serves to indicate the positions ofsaid member I 1 p With the construction set forth, it will be seen that when it is desired to prime the engine as in the starting of the latter, it is only necessary to rotate the member 10 to the position seen in Fig. 6, or to a positlonin which opening 20 will be in registration gasolene or any air, it is only necessary to shift the member member 10 is in this position, upon turning over of the engine, the suction of the cylinders will cause a partial vacuum .to be created in member 10 which will have the. ef-
fect of drawing fuel thereinto through the pipe 14: and passage 15; the fuel thus drawn into member 10 passing through pipe 18 into the intake manifold of the engine, tl1us serving to prime the same and facilitate starting.
' When it is desired to adjust the supply of 10 to the position seen inFig. 4. In this position, upon suction being created by the engine pistons, air will'be drawn through" openings 16 and 19 into the member 10 and thence to the intake manifold of the engine. The openings 16 and 19,- being relatively muchlarger in size or cross section than the passage 15 and opening into free outer air, the suction of the engine cylinders will have practically no effect on the longer and deeper passage 15, or the e'fiect will be so slight that no gas or fuel'will be drawn through said passage. .Thus when theopening 19 is in full registration with the opening 16 nothing but air will be fedto the engine. Through adjustment ofthe'member 10 it will be seen thatthe supplyof air to theengine cylindersmay be readily-and easily controlled. Where it is desired to supply neither fuel nor air to the engine, the member 10 is ad-. juste'd to the position seen in Fig. 5, when communication with the opening 17 is closed. While I- have illustrated and'described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable'of variation and modification" without departing from the spirit of the invention. 7 I therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details ofconstruction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims. p
' Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is a 3 15 In a device of the class described, a fuel supply nozzle, a mixture conducting pipe having an entrance in proximity to the supply-nozzle, a casing-forminga hollow chamber entered-by the fuel supply nozzle and the entrance of said mixture' conductin pipe,there being an air intake port: in said chamberof greater size than the'openingin the conducting'pipe, and a valveplate carriedby the hollow chamber movable to com trolthe air intake opening and the entrance to the mixture conducting pipe, provided with an opening approximately the size of the air intake'opening, adapted to in one position, register therewith to admit air into said chamber, and provided with a plurality of spacedopenings adapted to independently to the mixture conducting pipe, the whole so arranged that the.mixturelconducting outlet opening may, by properly positioning the valve member, at the will of the operator,
