FLOWER-POT SUPPORT OR HANGER.
Specification of letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 15, 1919.
Application filed February 9, 1916, Serial No. 77,339. Renewed December 21, 1918. Serial No. 267,873.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DUNCAN MACAW, a subject of tlhe King of England, residing at Norwood, in the county of Delaware and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flower- Pot Supports or Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to supports and more particularly to new and useful improvements in flower pot supports or hangers.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved supporting device constructed whereby a number of like or unlike objects may be supported in spaced relation for any purpose.
Another object ofthis invention is to construct a support of the class described which is adjustable to various objects, simple in construction and cheap to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages will appear from the following detail description and the claims, taken with an inspection of the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevational View of my improved pot hanger.
Fig. 2 is a. top plan View of the same.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 33 of F ig. 2.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged perspective view of the anti-spreading device of my invention, the supports being shown in dotted lines.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, wherein similar reference characters designate like and corresponding parts throughout the various views, 1 designates a plurality of standards or posts, which may be the supports of a, plant-house or the like. Mounted on each of the posts 1 at convenient points, I provide bracket arms 2 which are adjustable to any height desired, being maintained in a given position by setscrews 3. It is preferable, of course, that the brackets 2 be all in the same horizontal plane as shown to'advantage in Fig. 1.
More specifically, my invention comprises a plurality, in this instance a pair, of parallel spaced rails 4 placed upon the brackets 2 and supported thereby. The rails are a'djustably maintained at a given width by means of a plurality of anti-spreading devices which are all identical in form and a description of one will therefore suffice. As shown to advantage in Fig. 4 the antispreader consists of a strip 5 bent on one extremity to provide a tongue 6 for engagement with the outside edge of one of the rails 4. The strip is provided adjacent the opposite end with a plurality of apertures 7 through which a pin 8 is placed for engagement with the outside edge of the other rail, as best shown in Fig. 3. It is preferable that the tongue 6 be bent at slightly more than a right angle in order to prevent displacement of the antispreader.
In use the rails 4 receive articles of various kinds therebetween, but will be found particularly adapted to hanging flower pots and the like. The drawings show a plurality of flower pots 9 arranged between the rails, the flanges 10 of the pots preventing them from falling. However, in actual practice it will be found that the rails do not need the cooperation of the flanges to support the pots,
provided the rails are properly adjusted.
All of the pots need not be of the same size, since to a limited degree pots of widely varying sizes may be supported together. \Vhile flat strips have been shown for rails it is to be understood that any form of material may be employed, that is, the edges of the rails may be arcuately recessed to more read- 11y seat a pot, and the anti-Spreaders may be lengthened in order to embrace more than a pair of parallel rails. I desire to lay particular stress on the simplicity and cheapness of this invention as well as the unlimited scope of its applications.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that a clear and comprehensive understanding of th construction, operation and advantages of my invention may be had, and while I have shown and described my invention as embodying a specific structure, I desire that it be understood that I may make such changes on said structure as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as described.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination with a plurality of upright supports, laterally projecting brackets vertically adjustable thereon, a pair of spaced horizontally extending object sus engaging the outer side of one rail and the other end adjustably connected with the outer side of the opposite rail for maintaining the rails in adjusted position and to prevent their spreading.
2. A device of the class described comprising supporting brackets disposed in a single horizontal plane, a pair of spaced parallel object retaining rails adapted to rest on said' brackets, transverse strips positioned on said rails, a laterally bent tongue at one end of 10 each of said strips adapted to engage the outer side of one of said rails, the other end of each of said strips having a plurality of longitudinally spaced apertures therethrough, and a transverse pin receivable in any of said apertures adapted to engage the outer side of the other rail tolimit the out- Ward movement of the rails.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature hereto.
DUNCAN MAGAWV.
