T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ELMER E. LANE, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Berwick, in the county of York and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in skiving-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to skiving machines, and more particularly to machines for skiving blanks such as box toes, counters, etc, which are made of a fibrous material that has been treated with a self-hardening composition. i
A large portion of the box toes, counters and shank stiffeners used in the manufacture of shoes are made from sheets of fibrous material impregnated with a hardening composition containing waxes or shellac and hydrocarbons, which may be softened by heat to permit the blanks to be properly shaped. The blanks are usually skived in a machine which has a die roll provided with a cavity of the shape of the blank to be produced, a pressure'roll for holding the blank in the die cavity, and alskiving knife to act on the blank while it is held in the cavity. While the blank isbeing pressed into the die cavity and being out by the skiving knife, considerable dust and fine shavings, consisting mostly of the hardening composition, are formed. During the skiving operation sufficient heat is generated to soften the dust and shavings so that they form a sticky mass which adheres to the die and pressure rolls 7 and seriously interferes with the skiving of templates the provision in a skiving machine Patented Apr. 15, 1919.

having a skiving knife, a die roll and a pressure roll made up of a series of feeding disks spaced apart, of a series of waste removing plows projecting to the bottom of the grooves formed between the feeding disks.
Other features of the invention consist in certain features of construction and combinations of parts, the advantages of which will be obvious to those skilled in the art from the following description.
The various features of the invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a well-known type of skiving machine showing the die and pressure rolls and the application of the improved cleaning devices thereto; Fig. 2 is a detail view in rear elevation of the die and feed roll shown in Fig. 1, together with the improved cleaning devices therefor; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the cleaning device for the die roll.
The preferred form ofthe invention shown in the drawings is illustrated as embodied in a skiving machine of the eneral type-shown in Letters Patent No. 1573,2359, dated February 29, 1916, to E. E. Lane. This machine is provided with a die roll 10, a pressure roll 12 and a skiving knife 1 1, the cutting edge of which extends between the rolls substantially to the line of the centers. The die roll 10 has the usual die cavity 16, and the pressure roll consists of a series of toothed disks 18 which are keyed to a cylindrical hub 20 and spaced apart by washers 22. To assist the pressure roll in forcing a blank into the cavity 16, a series of pressing fingers 24 are adjustably mounted on a shaft 26 and have pressing faces 28 located in the grooves formed between the disks in position to yieldingly engage the upper face of the blank. The relative arrangement of the parts above referred to and their construction and mode of operation is substantially the same as that illustrated .in the. above patent, and reference is hereby made to said patent for a detailed description of said parts.
When blanks which have been treated with a hardening composition are skived in a machine of the type above referred to, the action of the feed roll and pressing fingers in bending the blank into the die cavity and the cutting action of the skiving knife forms a large amount of dust and fine shavings which consists principally of the hardening composition. The die and feed rolls become sufficiently heated during the skiving operation to soften the shavings and dust and the softened materials accumulate into sticky masses which get into the die cavity and between the disks of the feed roll and interfere with the skiving operation. The machine soon becomes clogged with the sticky mass and must be stopped and the die and pressure rolls removed and cleaned before the skiving operation can proceed.
To clean the die roll and die cavity a scraper 30, having a thin, flexible scraping edge 32 arranged to conform to the shape of the surface of the roll, is clamped on the die roll. Thescraper consists of a semi cylindrical sheet steel tube having the scraping edge 32 and a parallel clamping edge 3%. lVhen the tube is positioned on the roll it embraces the lower half of the roll, and the scraping edge is inclined in a direction 0pposite to the direction of rotation of the roll, so that any material on the roll will be removed as the surface of the roll is moved across the scraping edge. Before the scraper is applied to the roll the edges 32 and 34 are spaced apart a distance less than the diameter of the die roll, so that when the scraper is on the roll the edges 32 and 34: are firmly clamped against the surface of the roll. The pressure of the scraping edge 32 against the surface of the die roll will bend the edge to conform to the surface of the die cavity 16 as the roll is rotated, and any waste material will be completely removed from the cavity. The scraper is se' cured to th upper end of a plate 36 which is attached to the machine by means of spacers 38 and screws 40 so that a passage 42 is formed between the machine frame and the under face of the plate 36. A'strip of metal is cut from the body of the plate 36 near its connection to the scraper 30 and bent back to provide a guide 44 to receive waste material removed by the scraper and a slot 46 through which the waste material may pass to the passage 42 By this con struction the waste material may be delivered from the machine separately from the blanks which are discharged under the skiving knife and fall upon the upper surface of the plate 36.
The sticky mass formed in the skiving operation tends to work into the grooves between the feed disks and fillthe spacebetween thewashers 22 and the upper edges of the fingers 24. To clean the feed roll a series of plows 48 are provided which project to the bottom of the grooves'between the feed disks. The plows A8 are formed in groups of five on plates 50 which are secured to a carrier 52. The carrier 52 eX- tends across the feed roll andis adjustably mounted on a flange 54:, projecting rearwardly from the front wall of the blank hopper, by means of bolts 56 and slots 58.
The preferred form of the invention having been thus described, what is claimed as new is 1. A skiving machine, having, in combination, a skiving knife, a die roll, a pressure roll, and a scraper. clamped on the die roll to scrape material from the surface of the roll.
2. A skiving machine, having, in combination, a skiving knife, a die roll provided with a die cavity, a pressure roll, and a scraper clamped on the die roll and arranged to enter the die cavity to scrape material out of the cavity.
3. A skiving machine, having, in combina tion, a skiving knife, a die roll provided with a die cavity, a pressure roll, and a scraper fixed to themachine frame having a thin, flexible edge in contactwith the die roll, and means to press said edge against the face of the roll in such manner that the edge will conform to the contour of the roll as it is moved past said edge.
4L. A skiving machine, having, in combination, a skiving knife, a die roll, a pressure roll, a semi-cylindrical resilient scraper having a smaller diameter than the diameter of the die roll, and means to support the scraperwithits edges clamping the die roll.
5. A skiving machine, having, in combination, a skiving knife, a die roll provided with a die cavity, a pressure roll, a scraper arranged to engagethe surface of the die roll, and a plate for supporting said scraper having a slot to separate waste materials scraped from the die roll from the path of the skived blanks. 6. A skiving machine, having, in combination, a skivingknife, a die roll provided with a die cavity, a pressure roll comprising a series of feeding disks spaced apart, a scraper for removing waste material from the surface of the die roll, and a series of plows projecting to the bottom of the grooves formed between the disks.
