' MOSES F. CARR, 0F NEWTON, MASSACHUSETTS, .ASSIGNOR T0 CARB FASTENEJR COMPANY, OF CAMBRIDGE,.MA SSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION 0F E.
FASTENER.
To all whom t may concern: v Be it known that l, Mosns F. CARR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newton, in county of Middlesex, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, (whose post-office address is care of Carr Fastener Company, Cambridge, Massachusetts have invented an Improvement in Fasteners, of which the following description, in connection withthe accompanying drawings, is a speci'cation, like characters on the drawings representing like parts. f y f This invention pertains to improvements in fasteners, and more particularly, though not exclusively, to improvements in snap fasteners in which separation of two engaging elements can lbe effected by tipping movement of one of said elements in one direction only.
In the drawings: I Figure 1 is an elevation of a preferred form of fastener constituting one embodiment of my invention;
Fig.l2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. l;
Fig. 3 is a section Fig. 2.
It Vis among the objects ofthis invention to provide a snap fastener of cheapened colistruction in which the number of parts is rreduced to a It is the usual, construction in snap fasteners to `provide a socket having a front plate |and a back plate for attachment thereto, a spring being interposed between the front and back plates. It is among the objects of this invention to dispense with the back plate while leaving unimpaired the efficiency of the fastener and the positioning` of the spring.
Referring to the drawings, I have shown a stu-d 4 having `a head 5 adapted to pass between jaws 6 and 7 held in a socket. In
. the preferred form of my invention the socket :comprises a single stampedv plate 8 having anges 9 around the edges thereof and having portions -of the front thereof died inwardly to provide spring positioning means l() and 11, said spring positioning Ymeans performing the function normally performed by the intermediate plate of theV usual commercial socket. The socket is preferably formed so that the spring jaws 6 and 7 may be made from a single piece of wire and may be assembled withv the socket by pressing the spring into the front of the Specification of Letters Itatent.`
on the line 3-3 of socket from one end, the j aws'o and 7 passing in front of the spring-retaining elements 10 and 11.
Thestud 4 may .be Of'any suitable type, but preferably coperates with the jaws 6 and 7 to prevent rectilinear separation of the stud and socket and to permit separation of stud and socket by tipping movej said jaw means subsequent to completing the formation of said plate.
2. A stud and socket fastener comprising, in combination, a stud providing a head and a neck', a. socket providing two resilient jaws and a casing for said resilient jaws having one side thereof partially projecting .inwardly to provide a support for said resilient jaws on the inward side thereof.
- 3; A socket for separableA fasteners recessed to receive an inner resilient element providing two jaws, said socket providing recessed portions projecting inwardly frein the face thereof, said socket permitting the assembly of said resilient element therewith while supporting opposite sides of said jaws.
4. A socket for separable fasteners comprising a pair of .jaws bent from a single wire, and a casing for said jaws providing 'a supporting surface iin the plane of said jaws` forwardly thereof and a supporting surface in the plane of said j aws rearwardly thereof, the last named supporting surface being formed -by a strip projecting inwardly from the first named supporting surface.
5. A socket for'separable fasteners comprising a strip ofwire bent to provide two inwardly projecting' jaws, and a casing formed of a single sheet of metal formed to prov-ide' a supporting surface in front of said' jaws and a plurality of supporting strips rearwardly of said jaws.
Patenten am. is, ieia Application iiled August 23, 1917. Serial No. 187,803.
iio
6. A socket for separable fasteners having resilient jaw means, and a casing formed of a single strip of metal, said casing and said jaw mea-ns being interwoven each with the other. l
7. A socket for separable fasteners comprising a resilient jaw 7 and a casing 8 providing strips 12 and 13 forward of said jaw and strips 10 and 11 rearwardly of said jaw.
8. A socket for separable fasteners comprisin resilient jaws 6, 7, and a casing S provi ing strips 12, 13 forward of said jaws and a strip10 rearwardly of said jaws.
9. A. socket for separable fasteners com-,.
prising resilient jaws 6, 7, and a casing 8 15 I providing strips 12, 13 forward of said jaws and a strip'11 rearwardly of said jaws.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
