Description
FFICE.
ATE 'r JESSE HIGHFIELD, OF CENTEEVILLE, INDIANA.
IMPRovEM'ENT IN MAP-Homme.
Specification forming part of Letters Iatent No. 130,050, dated July 30, 1872.
SrEcInrcATroN.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JEssE HIGHEIELD, of Centreville, in the county of Wayne and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Adjusting and Preserving Maps, Charts, 8vo.; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specication.
` The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a device for preserving and adjusting wall-maps, charts, &.c., as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the saine, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which represents a transverse vertical section of my device.
A represents aswin gin g box attached to the ceiling of a room by rings a. a and hooks b b. This box is provided with a slatted bottom, B, havingspaces between the slats one-eighth or one quarter of an inch wide, through which maps or charts C C, on canvas, can pass, they being wound upon rollersI) D passing through the box. On the end of each rollerD, outside of the boxA, is a pulley, E, from which a cord, d, passes over a pulley, Gr, attached to a plank, H, at
the end of the room. Each cord @has its own pulley in said plank, and tothe end of each cord is attached a weight, f. These weights hold the'maps or charts up in the box until wanted for use, when the weights are raised and hung on hooks arranged for this purpose. There is also a weight, h, attached to the bottom of each map or chart C to hold it steady and insure its proper working. The weights ff and h 71l should all be numbered according to the number ofthe map or chart which they operate. To the plank H, directly under the pulleys Gr, is a box, J ,fattached, in which the weights f f are placed. This box should be provided with lock and key, so that nobody but the proper person can operate the maps.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The pulleys E and G, cords d, weights j' and h, and box J, in combination with the swinging box A, with slatted bottom B, and series of rollers I) D, each having a map or chart, C, attached, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing 4as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JESSE HIGHFIELD.
