No;i 130,000. v 'Patentedlmfao-,187m
y @inventari `the purpose. or wrench, shaped to tit the stop-cock, which :UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM WUERZ, .OF NEW YORK,N. Y.`
INIPROVEMEN'l IN LAMP-LIGHTING APPARATUS.
Specification forming part `of Letters Patent No. 130,000, dated July 30, 1872.
l Specification describing certain Improvements in Lamp-Lighting Apparatus, invented by WILLIAM WUERZ, of the city and county U ot'New York and State of New York.
Nature and Object of the Intent-ion. A
The nature and object of my invention are to produce an apparatus for lighting lamps or lanterns which at the same time opens (or shuts) the .stop-cock and ignites the escapin g gas without requiring the person performing the work to either climb up to the lamp orlantern or to carry ladders or other kind Vof steps with him, thus performing the work in the shortest possible time.
SPECIEICATICN.
In the drawing, Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section ofthe la1np-lightin g apparatus Fig. 2, front view thereof 5 Fig. 3, side view thereof. f
Similar lettersof reference indicate corresponding parts in the drawing and specification.
A is a pipe, tube, hollow pole, or handle. B is a rod with teeth, f, to move the key or wrench C. g is a knob which projects through the slot t' to move the rod B; U, the key or wrench, constructed as shown in drawing, may be of` suitable length and size `to fit d is the cross-hole in the key the instrument is intended to open and shut; e, teeth in the shaft of the key or wrench, by which the same is turned one-fourth of a circle, or more, if desirable. E is the boX or frame in which the key'or wrench revolves.
F is a ring with a set -screw tosecure the key upper end of rod B. K is a cover to preventV the-lamp or torch from being extinguished by wind, rain, or other outside iniluences. Lamp L is, when the knob g is pushed upward, raised to the upper end ot' tube G, and, also, at the same time and by the same motion, the key or wrench C opens the stop-cock z of the lamp or lantern, which, being lighted, will readily set fire to the then escaping gas. Instead ot the tube G a solid stem of wood may be fastened to the upper part of the frame E, andthe lamp or torch L be secured to its upper end, with the cover to protect the same; but when this is adopted the rod B will end when passing through the upper side of frame E. When the lamp or lantern shall be eX- tin guished, the stem with torch may be unscrewed and not carried with the instrument. Knob gis to be pushed upward before setting the cross-ho1e d on the stopcock z and then pulled downward, thus closing the stop-oooh,
Having thus described Inyinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination of the tube A, rod B, frame E, and wrench C, constructed and ar ranged to operate as described.
2. I claim the movable torch L, in combination with sliding rod B and toothed portion e in wrench C, substantially as described and shown.
WM. WUERZ.
